Charging problem???
So I have a 2004 Ultra Classic. First noticed this the other day when running my spot lights.. The battery and engine light came on and charge was low when running spots. Turned them off and charge went up problem temporarily fixed..

Running up from Baton Rouge to Natchez tonight when I was running brights it did it agian. At first light would go off when I switched to dim. Later just stayed on even on dim. Voltage very slowly dropped from 10.5 to 10 and would not increase. Finnally made it to hotel and bike will not start now.. Battery to low.

So what do you guys thing? I am thinking alernator is going out. Or is it the battery or something else??

Have your battery tested but its probably a loose ground.

Look for a post here about checking the regulator, I would guess that is your issue, could be a stator also.

I would eliminate the simple stuff first. 90% of electrical issues are a bad ad ground.

if you have a voltmeter, alternator should be putting out 16 to 20 volts AC per 1000 rpm, measured at the plug

All the diagnostics said regulator.. Changed it out and it still would not charge. Checked the stator with Voltmeter and they seemed good but got some pretty high readings but the ground was good. Pulled the primary cover and noticed the smell of burned eletronics in the oil. Turned out 5 of the magnets on the rotor had come off and fried the stator. Should be back on the road tomorrow when the parts arrive.
