Slash downs. I don't need to see the inside of the pipes - and neither does the rain and any other debris that needs a resting place. Plus, my wife is a frequent passenger and the slash downs will direct the sound away from her ears instead of towards them.

Personally, I like the exhaust note of the stock mufflers on the Tourers. It's a deep, rhythmic note that simply lacks a bit of volume. If I can find a few more dB's of volume, I'll be pleased.

I'm not sure why you're wearing the earplugs; however, if it's related to the volume of your exhaust pipes, then I'd strongly consider lowering the volume. I'm not a proponent of the "loud pipes save lives" movement.

Finally, regarding the cat vs. non-cat debate, I think it's a farce. The simple fact is that the cat serves a very practical purpose. I'm no tree hugger, but I do try to be a good steward of our environment and an advocate for the health and safety of its citizenry.

The only reason I would wear earplugs is wind noise. I can always hear it over my bike no matter how loud the pipes.

i can't speak for the op, but a lot of folks (myself included) wear earplugs to mitigate the windnoise not the exhaust note. i have tinnitis and if i don't wear earplugs when on the interstate (or any other high speed road) then the ringing in my ears is very intense for a couple of hours afterward.

FenderGuy with you on keeping it quiet. I actually like the stock exhaust on my 06 Ultra but am planning on buying the 3.5 inch dyno tuned slip-ons (at $300 they seem reasonable). But I wonder if there will be a noticeable difference in performance with that expenditure. I am only considering doing it to make the bike run better, not louder.
I will say a recent afternoon road trip (about 200 miles) on my shovelhead FLT with 2-into-1 exhaust was made more pleasant by the steady "full bodied" sound of that engine on the open road - was it Springsteen or Seger who said something "You can listen to the engines
Moanin' out it's one note song."

Same here. Can't ride without them.

Been thinking about some Pro Touring mufflers for my Street Glide. But nobody around here has any for me to hear. I do NOT want Rinehart sound. Seems every other bike has them.

Exactly why I bought the Pro Tour mufflers. They sound deeper, meaner, low sound when cruising, doesn't interfere with tunes, but bark mad when you get on it. Jamie hit the nail on the head with these pipes.

I wear earplugs due to tinnitus as well. It is not the volume of the pipes it is all the other noises as others have stated.

I think you will like the Jackpots especially with the cat still in place.......will give you a lower deeper tone without being overly loud. I like the sound of my Supertrapps but if I ever change the head pipe out I would change the pipes as their straight thru open design would be too loud for me. Are you going to get them this season? We had snow already last night here :/

I'm curious which are louder the Jackpot 4" or the Pro Tour mufflers. I've decided on the Jackpot Stainless Steel 2/1/2 head pipes and now wondering about performance vs volume of the two mufflers. I don't want too loud.

I doubt you will see a marked improvement with a 'muffers only' upgrade.

To maximize the performance return on your investment, you'd have to spend a bit more and do the Stage I upgrade. For an additional $225 (approximately), you can add a Big Sucker air cleaner and Nightrider fuel management and gain 7-12 HP in the process. Now, THAT'S bang for your buck!

Did you look down the ends of those Jackpot's, Port? Looks like a straight-thru design to me!

I'm probably going to get them this year, but it will be a Spring project for me...

We're supposed to be getting some snow flurry activity tomorrow, possibly mixed with rain, then changing to snow later. Geez! I grew muscles form shoveling snow last year. Can't wait to retire to a warmer climate.
