Default Ape install Q's

I just got a beautiful set of 13" "open" apes from BR custom bars. I want to do the install myself and have a few Q's bout the install.

1- I've read some guys have been able to just re-route thier existing wiring and been able to install apes w/out splicing. How high can you go b4 needing to extend?

2-If extending is needed, I see 3 options

A-Run all new wires from switch housing to connector,(complete replacement)
B- splice wires twice to lengthen and retain the little metal connector on the end

C- splice the wires once and try to find new connectors and a crimper for them.

Any suggestions or hints??

3- My bike is an 07 SG, I want to upgrade to a 1 piece riser clamp. Does the HD one have issues with hitting the stereo? If so, Yaffe offers one, anyone got experience with his? Does it solve possible radio fitment issues?

4- Upgraded riser bushings....needed or not ??

Thanks for any comments or suggestions !

I have 13" bars and I did not need to extend wires. I just rerouted them under the radio. I already had a one piece clamp, but most say to get one. As far as riser bushings? A definite yes. I did not do mine when I installed the bars and regretted it after they started getting sloppy. I had to change them out afterwards, and it would have been much easier to do from the start. Good luck

the added leverage from the longer bars makes the stock bushings feel really sloppy.

Piston p..thanks for the reply. When you rerouted your wires, roughly how much xtra did you have? I have a feeling ape sizes can run different from different manufacturers like boots.

I too am getting ready to pull the trigger on some 13" PrimeApes... glad this thread was started.

Does HD make a simple p&p extension for the tbw? I came across #70198-07, but can't seem to find a pic.

What bushings do you suggest?

Since I am stationed in Germany for about 8 more months, I wanna make sure I get all parts ordered with minimal down time ya know

Thanks
Rick

I didn't have enough to place them back up near the speakers, but maybe had another 1" or so. If I went any higher I would have to extended wires.

HD does make a one piece TBW. It is a CVO part I believe. I did not buy one of those either. What I did do, was tape up the green connector before running it through the bars. I used the Harley poly bushings, but there are some others out there just as good

I will be able to tell you more in a couple of weeks as I have my stuff on order. I have read and asked around a lot on it and it appears you can do 12-13 with the reroute and then you need to extend. I ordered 12.5 bars so will reroute but extending is not a big deal. The Namz kits are easy or if you are cheaper, you can do your own.

When I put apes on my RKC, I did my own extensions. Not a big deal but a lot of soldering. If you go that route, just make sure you stagger the splices so you don't have a big wad all in one place. As for the TBW, there is a kit for that by HD. I have read it is not wise to splice in extensions on the TBW.

My concern now is the ABS. Looks like I have to pull the tank to replace the master cylinder to ABS module line. Between the bleeding of the ABS brake line and the bleeding of the clutch line, I will have a few new skills to learn.

Good luck with your install.

When splicing is done, where are people leaving the splices? Are they being positioned so they wind up inside the bars or are all the splices placed inside the fairing?

If I were to splice I would definitely be doing it at the end that goes in the fairing. If something came loose it would be a bitch to have to pull wires out of the bars and start over. One thing you will want to do is stagger the splices like steel said.
