hi all
first time post for me on this fine website. i have an 06 electra glide standard that i recently bought and i have been looking at the welds on the front neck area by the vin. the welds look like crap with big sharp edges.
i have been trying to look at pics of other peoples frames and i have been trying basic lookups with "ugly welds" and etc with not alot of luck.
my vin is intact and looks normal. its the area forward of it. it doesnt appear that someone did repair work on it but im just making sure its really "normal" as much as everyone elses. the left, bottom and top of the frame in that area looks normal- its just the right side that looks like this.
i saw that there are a couple companies that sell covers for these areas but i dont want to just cover a problem- if there is one
Is the title a clean title (not salvaged)? Do a search on the VIN number and see if it was ever in a wreck. Or, take to a local dealer and have them examine it. Just a couple thoughts for you.
I'll get on the pics as soon as possible.
I ran the VIN thru the NICB and it showed clean. I also ran it through Autocheck before buying and its clean there also. I know theres alot of title trickery in the world that takes place but I do have the title in hand and transferred and its un-branded.
i am trying to attach pics on here but if that doesnt work, they are in my album under my username.
the vin area looks good and so does the top, bottom and left sides of frame. its just the right and forward of the vin - under the harness and throttle cable. i think the rust is just from it getting rubbed on by those??
i just think that the jagged sharp welds dont look right
My welds are complete covered by the original black paint. Your pictures make it look like a heat transition line in the paint with weld being laid down after paint. I am not even sure what the weldline you are point to is for however.
Without seeing it in person I would say it is definitly not a factory weld. It appears to have areas of porosity and lack of fusion that would lead one to believe that the welder did not clean the area before welding, lack of experience or talent, lack of shelding gases or all of the above. The rusting area I agree with grf000, it appears to be from a heat effected zone.
