the soft lowers block cooling air from the motor- which is why the restriction on use. as they push through the air, they just make a big mess of turbulence which spills over the sides
hard lowers order the air flow to the motor and increase cooling ( in PHX I get oil temps 25ş cooler with the hard lowers on).
You could get soft lowers and just throw them in the saddlebags when the temps rise, I have a Pal who puts them on for the morning ride to work, takes them off for the ride home in the aft.
The H-D ones also have a cut out for hiway pegs if you use them

I have a pair of the HD soft lower's I keep in my saddle bag. If it start's raining or turns a little too cold, I'll put them on. Only takes a couple min's to put on or take off.
