At what point should I look at upgrading the charging system on a 2012 Limited? I have installed heated seats and a 500W amp. The seats are about 36W max but the 500W amp makes me a bit nervous. The stock charging system is about 600W. I have noticed the radio resets once in awhile while starting which leads me to believe that the battery isn't staying fully charged.
Lol, thanks for the electronics 101. I'm an electrical engineer so I think I can figure out that one. I know the amp isn't drawing 500W continuously. I just don't know how much headroom is available on the charging system for add ons. At some point your gonna draw too much and not charge the battery fully while riding.
Cool, thanks! Just seemed like the battery was getting weak a couple times. Now I turn off the heated grips and seat so I don't have that load on it while starting.
fair amount of headroom in the charging system on these bikes.- 50 amp charging system, that's a total of 585 watts
and if you look into it, the electrical system on your model bike is way advanced, has some neat features, relays and logic circuits
Voltage drop within the circuits is almost 0

I couldn’t help but get a chuckle out of this. I don’t think he knew you were an electrical engineer, you never mentioned it in your OP. If he knew this he may have assumed you would have figured all this out to start with and therefore no need for the post. What am I missing here?
I ride every day so no need for a tender. This is my main transportation.
Mike, Ohm's law is your friend. I just couldn't find anything telling me what the typical load is on the charging system. I guess I would be surprised if it was more than a couple hundred watts. Maybe I'll ask J&M what the typical current draw is on their amp at 1/2 volume.
