Default 2000 Road King - what do you think

I am looking into this 2000 RK from the dealer I have been a customer for many years.

I currently own a 2006 1200C (after not riding for about 20 years), and looking for a bigger bike.

I ride about 120 miles each day to/from work (highway), and am also looking to take longer and farther rides across the country.

Can you Touring experts let me know what you think about this RK below, pros and cons, and the price.

"A pre-owned Road KingŽ Classic in Suede Green and Vivid Black with custom grips, highway pegs, high-flow mufflers, a detachable backrest, and a factory security system. Don't miss out on an opportunity to own a Twincam touring machine for under ten grand!
Odometer: 20,393 Miles
Price: $9517"

Thanks in advance

100,000 miles on my 2000 FLTRSEI, so I'm biased. But the 2000's did come with a hot forged crank and the Timken Lefty bearing which 03 and later owners only wish they had.

The bike is an excellent candidate for gear drive cams, which gets rid of the Twin Cam tensioner issue.

If it's carbed bike, a Mikuni 42 is a wonderful addition. If it's injected, like mine, it should run dependably enough but is not a good system for engine building above 95"

$9,500 is a good retail price. On the street I'd pay more like $8,000.

Good Luck!

The bike is not so much an issue-- although the carbed version might be a better choice for reliability and less "mystery" when the bike breaks

pricing is high, look around.

I agree with the above post 8 ish might better pricing.
( some States charges no sales tax on private party sales ( like AZ) that can be a 10% saving- and a private party is not trying to cover the overhead for location and sales staff)

If you are not aware the touring bikes of a same year all share the same chassis, suspension, drivetrain- the difference is in how much fiberglass is or isn't hanging off it and radio/gauges etc.

Default Pricing

Pricing is way high, particularly if you are trading in your sporty. For a bike that old, I think $8K is more than fair, for private party maybe under that. None of the customizations are "fancy", that's all pretty standard stuff you'd see on any bike 12 years old.

Also, if you do decide to pull the trigger, make sure the bike's tires are nearly new and the 20K service is done, with evidence of such.

I have a 2K RKC and love it. Mine is FI. I picked it up in August and it had 25K miles on it. I bought it from a private party, practically stole it because he didn't know what he had.

It's a great bike. Like mentioned above, if you want to do major upgrades to the motor, this bike probably isn't for you. Take that money instead and buy a newer bike that is upgrade friendly.

One thing I did change is the mufflers. My baffles were rattling due to rotting. A friend had stock mufflers off of his wife's 09 Road Glide, so we tossed those on to see of the rattle would go away. No rattle and it sounds MUCH better now. Now she has a little bark to her and sounds more like a Harley. Who knew?

Our situations are almost identical. I went 19 years without a bike then in 2009 bought a 2006 Sporty 1200 Custom. Early this year I traded for a 2004 RK Classic with tons of extras. I paid $11.5 and don't think I overpaid. It had 36,000 miles on it but was kept in nearly perfect condition. The ride difference is almost too hard to describe, in fact I don't think you can even begin to compare the ride on a Sporty with that of a RK Classic. I have been totally satisfied with my trade and my RK Classic ride.

..I agree...too much!..and that wasn't the best year for Twin Cams...real skinny rear tire...Mag-Marelli Injection(not sure you can get maps for that unit anymore),...cam bearing issue 0f 99 carried into early 2000's...plus like was said...this is a 12 year old bike...8-8500 is ok, but anymore than that and you are overpaying IMO...good luck

Just for comparison there's 2 09 RKClassics on ebay for $12,500 that sound like a better deal. There isn't anything wrong with the 00, I have one with 108K, but for a few grand more I sure have a 9 year newer bike. With the 2000 you're looking at having to do the cam chain tensioners somewhere in the future, that's about a grand if you can't do the work yourself. I'd get an 09 & be set for a lot of years to come.
