a dyno run and a dyno tune are two different things. If you have a SE race tuner you should use it to do what is supposed to do and that is give you the ability to tune your bike whether on the dyno or via a smart tune. Most people do not have the required skills to really do a smart tune tho (not trying to cut anyone down just what I have noticed via reading posts on this site). Also check to make sure you do not have an intake air leak. What else was done to the bike?
Don't you have to do a dyno run before they can do a dyno tune?
I purchased a kit consisting of a EFI super tuner S.E. Pro as part of the upgrade. The upgrade consisted of piston kit , cylinder kit, compression releases, 255 cams, and taper adjustable push rods.
I've got 500 miles on the new engine and I don't think it should be backfiring through the throttle bosy at all........
The mechanic who did the upgrade is tellig me that I need to have it dyno'd........I think he is full of it, the bike should be running great even without a dyno.

well actually in order to get it running 100% to the best of its capabilities you will need to have it tuned either on a dyno or via the smart tune feature but still a professional on a dyno will get it the best. Every bike is different so even using the same parts as the canned map requires you will not be 100%. You are right it should not be backfiring thru the air cleaner and a good tune will get rid of that. Also like I said an intake leak can cause the backfiring as well. there is a big difference between a dyno tune and just a wot run on the dyno. A tune takes a lot of time and is not just a wot run.

I don't need it running 100% of it's capability... I'm satisfied with it's performance right now, I just think that it shouldn't be backfiring at all and if they had done a good tune with the race tuner it wouldn't be doing that.
I did bring it back and complained about it backfiring and the mechanic told me that I would have to have it dyno'd to remedy the problem....I do think he is full of it and the shop doesn't want to bother with it..
mayne I'm not expressing myself clearly here...let me try this again
Should my bike be backfiring through the throttle body after they used my SE super tuner to tune my bike?
Yes. Your bike wan't tuned, and the ECM isn't set for your new components. You got shafted. Then again, you indicate that you're "100% satisfied" with your performance, so stop complaining and deal with the backfiring you paid for.
You cannot do that kind of work without having the bike tuned. Ton of threads here and elsewhere about it. Don't listen to the Pollyannas regarding valve-to-piston interference. You need a tune.
Hey guys just finished upgrading my 2008 EG Classic from 96 to 103...
Everything was fine until today when I went out to start the bike she started backfiring thru the throttle body....this is after I hit the compression releases.
Checked with the mechanic at the Harley shop who did the work and he is saying I need to get the bike dyno'd to fix that problem....
Why did I have to purchase a race tuner.....? I was under the impression that that's how they fine tuned the bike after the installation was complete..... I hadn't planned on spending another 350 bucks to have some one tell me what hp and torque the bike is developing.
or can they actually remedy my problem....?
I am in the dark here....will someone please clear this up for me...
Is the mechanic at the shop feeding me a line of crap just so they do not have to re map my bike or what?
Thanks
Sleepy
When you modify your engine like you have of course you need a tuner, i.e. SE race tuner. The mechanic can load a map that is close to your build but you MUST take it and have it fine tuned on a dyno. On the dyno the fuel ratios will be dialed in and all other parameters such as starting, timing etc... This has to be done. There is no "canned" map that will fit your bike perfectly. Every engine is different even using the same components. A dyno tune is not just to see how much power you are making!

What do you think?
Dude!! there is no other way but to geet it on the dyno and fine tune it!! It is really just that simple!!
you can not do a good tune without doing the dyno, not sure by your post if they had already done that, if they did not you did not get a tune but rather a canned download so if you got new cams/big bore it will be needed. You got the supertuner so all you need is to spend a bit more and get it tuned properly. Did you check for an intake leak?
