Default 2000 Road King Engine Light

Engine light comes on upon acceleration and goes out when the throtttle is let off of, intermittently. In other words, it doesn't always happen, and does not leave a trouble code. Bike has @ 70,000 miles on it and has been maintained, ie., fluid changes, tires, brakes, batteries, and fuel pump/filter (injected). Mostly trouble-free though. It's a friend's bike and still runs aok, no stalling, stumbling, etc. Ideas?

Consider review of voltage. A drop in voltage or inability to maintain voltage could be cause. review negative battery cable connection at both ends.

Last talk we had I thought it sounded electrical. I remember he had a problem a couple of years back where there was a chafing/grounding problem under the tank and he had to do some repair work on the harness. He also had concerns about the charging system last summer and changed the battery. All seemed ok after that. I'll remind him of those things when I get back on shift Wednesday. May need to start looking there...

I would agree that you should rule-out the charging system first. See if the voltage regulator is applying it's normal voltage per thousand RPM called for in the specs. If it is not, then it could be the regulator...or it could be the stator. Any weak point in the charging system will eventually lead to a failed battery. It will happen slow, but it will happen. If your friend had to change the battery, then it's a good bet that there might be something hairy going on in the charging system. As recommended, ensure that the battery terminals are clean and clamps properly torqued. Ensure all visible grounds are clean and not corroded. Ground lugs need to be shiny and they need to mate with shiny metal for a good connection.

Consider running it by the HD dealer for a quick check of the voltage regulator. That check can tell you a lot and it's not that expensive.
