Silly question probably but is there a way to tell what cam is installed without completely removing them? The reason I ask is that I bought my 09 Ultra used. It has a stage 1 air filter and Rhineharts on it. The dealer I bought it from thought there may be a non-stock cam installed but said he had no way to check.

So is there a quick way to tell without having it dyno'd whether a performance cam is installed?

If per chance the previous owner had the performance items installed within the first 60 days of purchase by an HD dealer, the parts would be listed under the warranty section on a check of the SWR entry. What's your VIN number and I'll check it out for you. If the parts were self installed or by and Indy, then it won't show up.

lift the push rod covers, if the exposed push rods are 1 piece then it is most likely a stock cam.

if they are adjustable ( nuts in the middle) then it is likely that cams have been swapped.

( when installing cams, the short cut is to cut the old pushrods with a bolt-cutter, installing adjustables in place- this allows a cam swap with out removing the tank, rocker covers etc and cuts the labor to 1/3

Lots of guys go through the rockers in order to keep their solid pushrods, because they don't trust the adjustables. And many of the SE stage kits come with perfect fit (solid) pushrods.

If there is a tuner with the bike you should be able to tell what map was downloaded. If no tuner, it probably only had a dealer download in which case the dealer can read the ECM on the Digital Technician to obtain what download was flashed. I'm guessing without a tuner and only a download that the bike only has a Stage I and no cams.

That's a good call. About the only exception might be a stage II configuration, with se255 cams and download, but you'd think that riding the bike would tip you off in that case. Those cams have a pretty snappy throttle off idle, and just don't feel like stock cams.

Do dealers share info on non-warranty repairs/upgrades with HD?

Only warranty work is shared with MOCO. Repairs and upgrades are kept on the individual dealer's system. Any upgrades installed by dealer within 60 days of purchase gets added to the 2 year bike warranty and is logged with MOCO.
