Once again, I have deveolped a rattle on my left side pipe after the motor warms up and the idle drops. It's driving me freaking nuts. I've already replaced the rubber isolater that the pipe mounts run through twice. Both times it helped for a while, but back again. Now I can't really tell if it's the baffle inside the pipe or the pipe itself. When I push up on the pipe from the back of the pipe, firm against the mount, rattle stops, but I don't believe the pipes are supposed to be fitted without any movement...correct? I've tightend all heat shields and that isn't the problem.
In any case, I'm getting really tired of of this reoccuring problem! Everythings fine when she first fires up, but after the second stop light I can expect to hearing the clanging. So, I'll have another look at from the dealer, but I think I'm VERY close to pulling the trigger on a D&D Fatcat with Ghost pipe. I ran a Thunderheader on my Fatboy and really liked it a lot, but I think the Fatcat is a much better looking 2-1 pipe.
In the meantime, any other ideas regarding the rattle?
It sounds like your pipe may be hitting the left side cover. Sometimes there's not much clearance there. It if is hitting, there is a chance that your front motor mount is worn out and letting the bike rock too much at idle.

What do you mean by "left side cover" XXX? After hearing so much about worn out motor mounts I keep wondering if mine is. I do have a fair amount of vibration through the floorboards and at idle, but it doesn't seem bad enough to be a broken motor mount, but then again I'm not sure what that would feel like. I hate having to take the bike to the stealer for crap like this[:@]
The color matched left side cover on the bike. Mine was hitting there. When I would accelerate from a stop, I could hear it hitting. The engine and exhaust move, but the frame stays still. Mine had very little clearance between the pipe and that cover. Repostitioning the pipe did no good in my case. The pipe just fit tight on that side. I put a felt bumper on the cover and took care of the problem. You can see it in this pic.
The front motor mount is just a rubber donut. Your's may be worn out.
