Default Another Tour Pak lighting question . . .

Did a search and couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for.

Has anybody put non-HD (run/brake) taillights on their Tour Pak, kinda like the little inexpensive surface-mount ones from the auto parts stores?

If so, is there anything more to it than simply splicing into the existing running light and brake light wires? Any problem with current draw or anything like that?

(Any pics would be appreciated.)

I don't think there would be much problem in putting other lights on the tour pac. It's just a matter of cutting the holes and mounting them, then running the power line to the connector near the left shock.

Steve, I posted this write up a while back, Includes some pictures. It is a little more than the stuff from a parts store but a lot less than anything Moco offers.

there are lots of lighting options- adding leds is slick as you don't have to worry about current draw.

not all leds are created equal- color temperature, angle of viewing ( some are very narrow) brightness.

the hard part will be selecting what you want to use.

color code:
black/ground
blue /run
red/ brake

Great write-up, Earl!! I got some really good ideas from that.

That's what I was hoping to hear about the LED's.

And, thanks for the wiring color code, Mike!! That saves me from searching for it.

Unless you already have one, spend your $$$ on a Brightasslight tail light on your '07. I have the BAL-1R on my bike (same as a BAL-1, but a solid red tail light rather than the clear lens on top for a license plate), and it totally dominates the rear lighting even with the Ultra tour pak with its rear corner lighting and a HD tour pak spoiler LED installed. From the standpoint of "being seen," there's nothing you will add to the chopped tour pak that will get a cager's attention more than the BAL-1.

If you're mainly interested in dressing up the rear of the chopped tour pak and adding some lighting, nothing I've seen in auto parts stores will "dress up" a TP--they're basically trailer bolt on, surface mount products. Custom Dynamics, and others offer more attactive products IMO.

The info provided previously on the wire colors is accurate. Good luck with your choice.

When finances eventually permit, I'm definitely going with the Brightasslight tail light. Thanks!!

By the way, do they also happen to make any Tour Pak type lights??

I haven't checked BAL's website for other products they may offer.

etstrine's write-up is great, and the mods he's done are very nice; but a BAL-1 will be a much better "be seen" solution to lighting up the rear of the bike than adding relatively low lumens led's.

Put the $$$ you will spend on "interim" lighting solutions in a coffee can and add to it when you can and get a BAL-1. I went through adding the HD spoiler LED to the tour pak, adding the HD module that makes the rear turn signals run/brake lights, adding the HD saddlebag spoiler LED's to the back of my '04 EG, and adding an Ultra tour pak with its corner run/brake lights and side marker lights and nothing comes close to the visibility of the BAL-1. In other words, I wasted a lot of $$$ on other lighting solutions before purchasing the BAL-1R.

Just my $.02.
