Excuse my ignorance, but what is the advantage to the heim joint, and where would I buy them?
Thanks
Stronger joint, less slop, you can buy stainless at McMaster Carr $12 ea and use your OEM rod, 5/16-24. or spend $100+ for a "custom" linkage at the HD store.
or maybe not...ordered mine 1/13...still shows as being in Fla. Even though they claim free FedEx, it's really shipped usps. Guy on the phone said to call back if it's not here by Monday the 23rd. I KNEW I shouldn't have ordered on Friday the 13th
I just went out and measured my OEM shift rod (center to center) of the hiems and it is exactly 12 inches. The new shift rod discussed here (Demon Cycle / $35 delivered) is 11 ˝ inches when closed, so as discussed here, that will leave ź inch of exposed threads once adjusted out.
SO……….after thinking about this for a few minutes, I realized that the locking nuts are also exactly ź inch so I simply added in an additional locking nut to each end and VIOLA…… a perfectly adjusted set-up that looks good, is exactly 12 inches and no need to adjust the shift lever. Actually, this is a great improvement in that the extra nut acts as a jamb nut and so no way for the adjustment to travel..
By the way…the size on the extra nut(s) is 5/16ths X 24. Available in chrome at ACE.

I considered doing that, but I didn't think there was much thread left on the linkage rod.
