I figure Harley is smrt. They design the stock air cleaner to meet epa standards noise and otherwise and support exactly the hp a stock bike will make. YOu want a little more you have to pay more. The more you want the more it costs.

MAP- Manifold Air Pressure. re-map: to make changes in the variables in the ECM that affect the Manifold Air Pressure.
Tuner, an electronic device that allows you to change the variables in the ECM.
Yep, this sounds like a dark conspiracy from the portals of hell....bwahahahaha...

You got it. They have to meet 50 state noise drive-by standards, that's the main reason why the stock air cleaner is restrictive. It also prevents water from saturating the filter for people that ride their bikes in monsoons.

Everything is a compromise.

AIM said you only need a tune if you do get running problems. However, they explained that the function of the 02 sensors is to adjust the AFR. If you want more power then a non compliant tune that has a richer AFR. All HD downloads are EPA compliant as they don't want to pay the $10K per bike fine.

I did a better breather on the 12 103 RG and it runs great. Dealer said nothing when they did warranty work on it last week.
The stock o2 sensors are narrow band, meaning that they only read a small amount of A/F. They only have the ability to adjust in small wondow of A/F. AIM might of run that bike on the dyno and picked up 8 HP yadda yadda yadda, but at wide open throttle the o2 sensors are turned off (open loop) and not making any adjustments. The stock mapping runs richer in areas that are open loop so the bike probably didn't have any isues. The EPA only mandates certain parts of the MAP, mainly in cruising ranges, outside of the cruising range they don't care what A/F your bike is running. I would like to see AIM take that same bike and run it for 5000 miles then report back, unbiased of course, on the results. Then i'd like to see the top end tore down and i'd like to see the pistons and valves compared to another properly tuned bike with the same miles on it.

The same is true if you redo the intake and exhaust on a cage. you will have to get a CHIP with a new tune. All vehicles are set to run lean for the EPA, not the NHRA .The stock air filter is setup to allow the max amount of air that could be used with the EPA tune. You want more power, it means more air moving through the engine and the stock setup is a bottleneck that has to be removed.

I think the blame should be pointed in the direction of our government who seem to want complete control over every aspect of our lives. I mean a cat on a motorcycle? Give me a break. Note to everyone. Show up this fall to vote out all of the idiots who think they can control the weather by putting cats on a motorcycle.

Just saying.

this is just a simplified drawing of a fuel injection system with basic sensors shown and ECU instead of ECM. the MAP is the sensor in the throttle body that tells the computer about fuel air mixtures. when you go with a stage 1 set up you change the volume of air going into the engine and a tuner can allow you to go in and change things that a small screw driver would with a carb. The advantage is that on some dyno machines its all incorporated so you can make changes on the fly while the bike is running rather than riding for 15 minutes and hooking up and making changes....anyway, any time you increase the amount of air intake and exhaust, add cams etc...the MAP needs to be corrected so the engine will be more effective and efficient.
