I need your opinions.
I am looking at adding either speakers to the front lowers or to the saddlebag lids.
Which is more effective? Looking for opinions from those that have done it and what their experiences are.
You should probably be more specific in identifying what products you are considering. For example, which fairing lower speakers kit/product are you considering? Ditto the saddlebag speakers.
I would agree with mkguitar that speakers in front of you would be significantly more effective than speakers behind you, even for your passenger. Your ears are designed to pick up sound from in front of you. Consider also that you're moving forward so, just like your buddies behind you can hear your exhaust better than you can, the sound from your rear speakers will be somewhat lost behind you. To do only one I'd opt for the fronts.
OK a little clarification.
I currently have the stock HK head unit. Also ARC mini amp driving ARC speakers in the fairing.
While most of the time this is a good set-up occasionally I am looking for more sound.
I was considering going to the new RF 4 channel amp and adding speakers to the lowers. It only makes sense to me that the lowers would be better than the bag lids for the same reasons you guys mentioned. But you never know. Sometimes when you think you have it all figured out, turns out you don't.
I would think that the speakers in the lowers would even be better for the passenger for the same reason.
I know on the occasions my wife does ride with me that she says she can't really hear the rear speaker pods.
She is looking at getting her own bike so a passenger would be even less than I have now.

I found it while looking around for prices on Rockford amp for myself. They sell a lowers kit with speakers, PBR300X4 amp and wiring for under $400.00.
Might be just the ticket for you.
Go to car audio section then look at list on left for motorcycle speakers.
Astro, I know there are lots of good sytems out there and you can spend lots of cash on what you want...I decided to go with the Hogtunes 6 speaker system when it was time. I loved the clean look of the speakers in the lowers too. Just added the tweeterpod this weekend with the help of some good friends. The tweeter made a HUGE difference in sound. Getting those highs to hit made the whole system sound better. FYI for the question that always comes up about the tweeterpods & windshield bags..Klokwerks 8.5 shield with T-bags 3 bag system and the Hogtunes Tweeterpod WILL all fit together. We crammed in the IPOD interface too. Ipod stays safe & sound in the tourpack...not hanging on the bags anymore. Enjoy the tunes whatever you choose.
