I'd completely agree. The stock cams are like the stock exhaust. Designed to reduce emissions, not to optimize performance.

The moco has done a bunch of work for us in recent years. The stroker crank and big bore pistons are now standard. The heads flow much better, and the beehive valve springs are capable of handling cam lifts over .570. One of the biggest blocks now is the smog cams. It almost doesn't matter which one you pick, as long as you're selecting a cam from the appropriate grouping. For a TC103, you could run the TW5, TW6, TW555, SE255, SE204, Andrews 37, Andrews 48, HQ500, Cycle Rama 575, just to name a few. Any of those will work, any will give you a nice boost in power. Some cams will like just a bit more compression, you could pull the heads, run a 030 mls head gasket and cams like the TW555 or Andrews 54 will spark to life in the lower range.

I ran the 204s in my 103 for a couple of years, and they worked well.

if your not changing anything else....keep a stock bike....but just want to do cams....makes things simple. There are a few cams that will move either torque or power into the rpm range you want based on your riding style. Thats basically what this is all about.

some cams need more compression to work correctly so that wil dictate piston changes or head work.

then you have the buisness of the max lift your present springs can support. Some cams require valve work in addition to the spring issue. You probally have behive springs. They give you some flexibility in cam choices, but not much.

then you have the buisness of push rods.....adjustable or oversized rods depending on measurement expectations for vlavle to piston clearence , etc.

then there's the tune....is the work a standard package that falls into a standard ecm map, or do you need your own tuning solution so you can tweak the mixture.

when you do the work, will you find any crank/oil pump/cam plate problems....be prepared for that.

since your going to pull the cam plate...do you want to upgrade the oil pressure relief valve.....add oil pump intake screens.....etc

so take a step back and ask what are you trying to accomplish....where in the rpm range do you want to move either torque or power. if you don't know the answer to this question, don't do the cam work.

I wanted my power in the lower to mid range level so I went with the SE255, they kick in at 2500 rpm and run out at about 3500 rpm but that is where I do most of my riding...
I don't have much horsepower but the torque 98 ft lbs is great...

Is the OP going for just a bolt in cam with no other changes in the engine i.e more compression and head work?

If i did not want to void the factory 2 yr warranty.... I would have gone to a different cam like a Andrews 54 - but, i found the SE255 are working fine.

lots of Low end and mid range what I like.

Cheers,

Mark

Update- have been looking at Fuelmoto site, the TW-777 and their B heads look great, the TW 555 or 777 have me thinking cam swap.......
