Default Intermittent audio

2008 FLHTCU, tour pack detach, so I don't have the rear speakers, or CB radio antenna hooked up. CB and intercom functions on the radio are Turned off.

The radio will be playing just fine and then suddenly no sound. The radio will still be on, the display is on, I can change channels, no static or anything, just NO sound at all. After a while the radio will start to play normally again. The louder I have the volumne turned up, or the more I have the BASS turned up the more frequently it happens.

Checking DTC's the only one I see is the B2021 Rear speakers open, this makes sense as I don't have the rear speakers on it. It hasn't done it while the bike is sitting in the garage, so I don't know what DTC's may be present when it's actually acting up.

Turning the radio off and back on has sometimes been successful in getting it to play again, sometimes I'll have to turn the volumne bar or BASS down to less than 50% before it will resume play though.

I do have the J&M Rokker speakers and 500w 4channel amp also.

Any idea's? It seems most search results from intermittent audio suggest the HK radio was bad??

Thanks,

The first thing I would do is check all connectors for any looseness, clean, apply dielectric paste, and reconnect them.

sounds like a loose connection going to the amp. If it was after the amp you would only loose one side.

Is the amp on all 4 speakers? So are all 4 channels of the amp powered up and no speakers on 2 of them? Maybe the amp is overheating and the safety is kicking in. Does the problem happen when the rear tourpack is on and all speakers are hooked up?

Another reason to look at the amp is more bass = more power = more heat. If the over temp safety is kicking in it would happen sooner.

I would look at the amp..... and all connections......

Amp is on all 4 speakers. When the tour pac is on and it happens, no sound out of any of the four speakers.

Sounds like the radio
If turning it on / off gets the audio to come back it's an indication of the Digital Signal Processor resetting. When the DSP goes bad, there is no audio sent to the radios internal amp.

Any speaker related DTC will not be valid with the amp in the circuit.

Put the tourpack on today, and wired the rear speakers so they are not going thru the amp. I guess I'll ride it like this until it cuts out again and see if it cuts out all 4 speakers or only the front 2. If it cuts out only the front 2 it will point towards the amp.
If it cuts out all 4 it will point to the Head unit. Does this sound logical? It will sometimes not cut out for several days at a time and then sometimes it will cut out repeatedly.

I'll crank the volumne higher than normal when i'm not in congested area's to try to get it to cut out. Higher Bass settings and higher volumnes seem to make it cut out repeatedly once it does cut out.

Any other suggestions? I'd like to only take the fairing off once to get this resolved.

I was gong to suggest bypassing the amp. Sounds like you have both bases covered in your latest test. Did your HK do this before you added this amp? If it didn't, then it's clear that the amp, or your wiring, has created some issues and may be responsible for damaging the output circuits in your HK...if in fact they are damaged. You should be able to recreate this problem in the garage. Just put the bike on Assy and play it for a while. See what happens.

I have the same problem on my 09 street glide with no amp. I do have Biketronics speakers though. I cleaned all connections an made sure they were connected all the way and it still happens. I'm probably just going to get a new aftermarket head unit.

Haven't been able to recreate it in the garage yet. Although usually it won't do it on the road until 45+ minutes it seems. Here lately most of my rides are only 30 minutes to/from workand it does't act up usually. I can't seem to let it play long enough in the garage. Just 10 minutes seems like an eternity when I'm just sitting there waiting for it to act up. Patience isn't one of my strong points.
