I'm with you guys. I've got ten thumbs when it comes to getting close to expensive paint and chrome. Mostly in my head, but I'd rather pay someone from the git go.
You're gonna like the apes. Very comfortable!
Good choice on the bars. I love my WO 14s. One question though......why did they remove the gase tank and seat? Is it so they can say it takes longer and charge more hours? Just wondering. I put my own on and didn't remove any of that
Looks like they took half your bike apart. I changed my bars and didn`t have to pull it apart that much.
Yeah, I think they do that because in a way, its easier. When people do stuff themselves, most gather/buy all the parts, and start when everything is present. Then if something doesnt absolutely have to be pulled off most try to avoid it, and work around whatever it is.
Mechs at the dealer (at least good ones) are used to ripping crap apart on a daily basis, and I think its probably easier for them just to tear into it. And the guy who is doing mine (very good mechanic, I trust this guy a lot, and he's particularly good at bars) started on it before he had all the parts and has a few projects going at any given time. Remember they need to stay busy so they don't do these things serially.
For those of you questioning why the tank and seat is off Keith's bike, his is a RKC that came with ABS standard, to change the brake line the tank and seat has to come off as the ABS unit is behind the right side cover.
Don't feel bad about paying somebody to do it. I had a minor panic attack after tearing mine down to the state yours is in last year for my 14" install, but it went well and I got it done in a little over a day. I'll probably have the same panic attack when I do cams and rockers in a month, lol.
I'm not all that into apes but I (yes me) put 11" Santee 1ź" dia. mini-apes on my RKC, , had originally put some HD Heritage 'Style' bars on so I wouldn't have to fool with replacing the stock clutch cable and brake line, but they had to go because of the weird wrist angles, the Santee's are perfect and don't look like ape hangers and have the perfect wrist angle and I also wired them internally for about $10 in material, the TBW side was a little tight but pulled through ok.,
I did have to extend the clutch cable and brake line (went with "Made in USA" 6+ Magnum Black Pearls on both sides), the time and effort was well worth it and I'm getting to know my new bike more and more everytime I do something to it, btw... all of the above is a first for me, what a great experience and keeps the needle low on the intimidation meter.
I'll get real pics when I uncover it next time I fire up the heat in the garage.
these Santee 11" / 1ź" bars are very nice for the price and very comfortable, a puts a nice beefy touch up front unlike the stock 1" bars
Buckinfitch,
I agree about the weird wrist angle with the Heritage bars, too much pull-back IMO. But, they are better than the OE Bars and I am using them. Overall how do you like the Santee bars? Are they as high as the Heritage with less pull-back?
I started off doing mine myself and after extending the wires they were just a little too short, (dont listen to friends telling you what length you need) so I took them off and just put the Heritage bars back on and still wasnt happy so it went to the dealer and they did the install.
Just had 12.5" installed on my RKC
do a lot of my own stuff, but I know when I haven't the time or in a little deep
it ain't like the days when I wrenched on Shuvs n Evo's
I'll probably have the same panic attack when I do cams and rockers in a month, lol.
Where are you? I'd like to hang out/watch/help (and buy beer) if its ok w/you, I'd like to learn.
I have this notion in my mind that it would be fun to do a "cam fest", get a few guys (and beers) together (at least 1 that knows what they are doing), buy and share 1 set of tools (and beer) so we can all learn/help each other, and save some cash (and drink beer). LOL
