Some told me that a 31T can use the stock belt, but my mechanic had it all apart and said there was no more adjustment left, and that I'd need the shorter belt.
Sucks because part of my decision of going with the 31T over the 30T was the fact that I could use the stock belt. Might reconsider and go for the 30T after all.
Are you really sure you need to go to the smaller primary pulley? The larger rear pulley should have taken care of the problem we had on '07-'08 baggers with being underpowered in 6th at normal highway speed of 60-70mph. But then again 2 on the rear is not the same as 2 off the front.

Thats why a shorter belt doesn't seem necessary unless they spec'd out a longer belt starting in '09.
The '07-'08 belts were 137 tooth , '09 went to 140tooth and adding two teeth to the rear pulley . Now by just adding two teeth to rear wouldnt necessarly mean you couldnt use the same belt as adding 2 to the rear causes less slack than removing 2 from the front. I think the reason for the longer belt was that the axel was moved farther back also on the '09
The shorter belt necessary when the smaller primary pulley is installed because you have to adjust the rear axel/pulley back to take up the slack created by the smaller diameter front pulley which then puts you at the max you can adjust. If the pulley is 1 or 2 teeth less it is also smaller in diameter. I hope i didnt talk in circles there'

Andrews states that when going to a 31t on a 09 up does not require a shorter belt, so that is a little better info than "someone". Sucks you gotta pull it all back apart though. I know my 08's wheel with the 68t rear pulley added(same as the 09) is almost all the way forward and still using my stock belt, so a 31t trans pulley will for sure fit my application using a stock belt.

Yeah I get all that but the rear pulley is 2 teeth bigger in 09. I have put on a 09 rear pulley on my 08 and the stock belt is still fine, no mods. I have regeared a bike or 2 in my time.

Not questioning you expertise just trying to explain- Adding 2 to the rear is not the same as removing 2 from the front. Hope that makes sense.
When I did mine Andrews gave me the size belt needed, i would beleive them.

As far as ratio's are concerned, you are correct. As far as belt length I don't know the answer to that. I know my 2 tooth bigger rear pulley barely fit using the stock belt on my 08. That's why I thought MAYBE HD spec'd out a 1 tooth longer belt for the 09 and up and the 08 belt might be a way to go for a 09 and up guy using a smaller trans pulley.
