I have an 2008 Road King Classic and I'm looking for a battery tender that comes with the correct connector for the stock battery tender connection. I have seen a ton of them on the net that have thier own pigtail for you to install or standard battery cable clamps. I don't want to deal with this, I just want to plug it in.
The $22 Schumaker at Walmart will plug into the HD pig tail. Most tenders come with two connectors the alligator clips and the pig tail.
The plug in pig tail is a standard dimension for all tenders. HD's is one of the few with a in line fuse and a heavier gauge wire. At $6.95 it is one of the few bargains at the dealer.
I have this little unit from Walmart. IMO one of the best values for the money in a tender made by Schumacher. It will plug directly to your dongle right out of the box...
I have one from Discount Auto. Was cheap and works awesome. I plug it in every night and by the time I wake up in the morning it's fully charged. It came with a plug that's identical to the Harley one that is already stock. I didn't have to install it, just an extra, just in case I guess.
The one from Walmart is the way to go. I picked the same one up at Amazon as well for same price. I have 3 altogether and never had a problem with any. However, I've heard some people say they plug theirs in every night. Well, if you ride your bike regularly, I do not see the point of this. I do use mine on my generator, which sits dormant for long periods of time, my quad (same) and my Street Glide during the winter. In spring summer and fall she gets ridden regularly so no need to put on the tender.
Either one Battery Tender, or Battery Minder ( and other brands ) come all ready to plug one end into your pigtail on your bike (they are a standard plug) and the other end to the wall outlet. I personally like the Battery Minder Plus, because it also disulfide's ( it pulse charges which loosens up and dissipates any current sulfur buildup in the battery after it's done charging.
I don't believe Harley installs a "stock battery tender connection" although many dealers do during set-up. The connector is a SAE-2 plug connector system utilized by battery tenders made by Deltran (who make Harley branded battery tenders). By far my strongest preference among battery tenders is the Deltran Battery Tender 022-0165-DL-WH 12-Volt 2-Bank tender. You can buy one at Amazon for ~ $75. With this you can maintain 2 batteries at the same time. I own 2 of these tenders and use them for my 2 Harleys, my electric start generator and my collector car.
I've had the generator since 1999 and it's still on its original battery (and yes it sees a lot of use in the winter)
