Default Help with exhaust

I have an 07 Ultra I just bought – only has 7,000 miles on it – I would like to do a stage one –

I would like to keep the exhaust as quiet as possible. What’s my choices? So many exhaust systems out there it’s mind blowing.

Will just adding a K&N air filter do the job with the OEM can for intake?

I assume I should have it re-mapped?

Thanks for the help with rookie questions

Thanks – tom

Tom, stage one is a hi-flow air cleaner, usually slipons and a ecm stage one download. You can keep the aircleaner cover, they will change the backing plate and put a improved filter element, looks like you still have the stock exhaust. You can keep it if you like it quiet and the dealer will download the stage 1 map.

The Harley Nightsticks or Fatshotz are supposed to be pretty quiet as they are both 50 State legal and have EPA stamps.

I went with Bub 7 Stealths which are also 50 State and EPA stamped. They have a deeper tone than the stock mufflers and give some mid to high RPM performance improvement..

the stock air cleaner is very restrictive. almost every aftermarket air cleaner ( incl. screaming eagle) will flow more than the motor will demand.

best bang for buck is the Ness Big Sucker on ebay from easternpc- you will want the version with the chrome backing plate--- a plain cast backing plate looks crap against the black and chrome motor.
it come with a K&N "style" washable oiled filter. ( should be under $120 shipped)- get the proper model- (08+ have different intake)

there are other options.

just adding a K&N will not result in high flow and power improvement- it'll give better filtering than the stock paper filter though

pipes... i use supertrapp 4" supermegs, hi flow, completely controllable sound. little lower tone. the disc baffle system breaks up higher pitched sound waves.

you can check the supertrapp site to look into that

supertrapp makes the similar screaming eagle branded nightstick and fatshots, which can be set up like the supermegs just by changing the disc stack and/or endcaps. ( take offs can often be found for under $100 each.)

- I am using a set of nightsticks with added closed end caps and added discs for noise control on my 09

these are all "slip on" mufflers which fit your stock header pipe

Is your bike a California model with catalytic converter in the mufflers ? ( if so, keep those just in case you need in the future or when re-selling

for over -all 'tone" or sound- it can be best to go to bike event and see what you like- and don't

I like my pipes to be deep sounding- and loud enough so that a following rider can tell if I am slowing or accelerating- if he is close on me.

tuning- there are aftermarket devices- I use nightrider.com XIEDS- under $125 shipped
they are a resistor pack which has the ecm produce a slightly richer mixture under most conditions. they plug inline with the o2 sensors in minutes

( there are other more complex and expensive devices- i leave it to you to read up on those options. power commander, fuel pak, etc.)

expect 7 to 10 horsepower gained- it's a pretty good bang for buck.

ONLY for 2010 up models with cats in the header pipe- the cat is what makes the mufflers compliant

those model mufflers can be altered with disc and endcaps to give great results on pre-2010 model bikes

With such a major change- 2010 and up advice doesn't apply well to a 2007 model bike

and "Screaming Eagle" branded mufflers have come in many different versions over the years, varying widely in design and results-

tracking a couple of changes:

2007 o2 sensors

2008 intake changed throttle by wire

2009 frame changed ( so different headers mounts, catalytics in CA headers)

2010 catalytics in headers ( all touring models) and 2011, 2012

as for fit, any pipe meant for newer than 1995 touring will fit-

the rest is character...

as far as H-D's fitment statements, they often have to take into account emissions requirement ( noise and or/ by products of combustion)
