not a idiot but just missing something , can not really understand what you are talking about with the gap the head light ring goes in a groove in the head light bucket or mount , we all call things different names , get your service book out , if you have one or go to HD.com and bring up a parts pic it may help

It can be a bear, If I remember right it was tough to hook the top in and also the instruction didtn 't seem clear about the visor and the ring mated. Stupid brain of mine. I' ll go look and see what I can remember.

It should fit according to my 2011 accessories catalog. How big is the gap? The reason I ask is the picture in the catalog shows a significant gap and one that I would question.

Thats not the one I put on..sooo..I had trouble with the rubber ring gasket, so if it helps I can see the ring seal running over top of the visor. The other problem was hooking it in at the top far enought to make the bottom fit the way it should. I know I had to keep at it for awhile until I found the right combonation.
My visor is the winged logo one. so its not apples and apples.
I hope this helps alittle. let us know what the problem is when you find it, and I know you will.

I had little trouble putting mine on.

as I tightened the screw, I worked the visor to take the contour properly.

just start at the top with each hand and work it toward the bottom so that it is not binding.

tighten a bit, do again

the gap closed up nicely

This has been a source of pain for many over the years, and the best fix I've found is to use a ratchet-bar clamp like this one.

The idea is that you need more to force the trim ring together than just the tightening action of the screw. So force it together first and let the clamp hold it in place while you tighten the screw. The plastic pads on the clamp won't harm the chrome on the ring, or at least it didn't on mine. Once tightened the ring will stay in place. It may not get rid of the gap completely but should get it close.
