I agree that ABS is not the answer for not paying attention or overriding the road conditions at hand.
Got caught twice this week in rain on the way home 20 miles each way on the highway. Like I said before I'm gonna hold out. It's not like I don't have a bike my 03 Classic is pretty sweet.

I started riding before you were a twinkle in your daddy's eye, and I'm done buying 900 pound motorcycles without ABS, EFI, or electric starters. I'll ride nearly anything, but if I'm buying - I'm buying with ABS.

Cops are among the best trained and best riders, and they insist on ABS.

Interesting comparison of ABS stopping on sand in the L.A. 2011 police bike evaluation.

Check out page 33. Road King did reasonably well comparatively.

Great thread....lots of passion about this subject. Dynamohm, glad you have come to a conclusion as to what is best for you. I hope that this healthy debate has proven useful to you in making your decision. I want to thank ALL responders to this thread for their insights. Healthy debate is colorful when done by passionate participants and I believe that this thread qualifies. It has helped me learn more about ABS and my mind is open on the subject. I especially liked the post about ABS on the front being great and the rear useless. That makes sense to me somehow because the "pulsing" sensation that my experiences with ABS have left me not caring for the feeling. Perhaps advances have been made to the technology to lessen or eliminate this trait. I would like to know if those that have it and like it,do you ever feel this sense of grab and let go and grab and let go over and over or it is more seamless? Thanks again to all and especially the OP for bringing it up to begin with. Ride safe and ride free.

It seems to me the only times it ever has activated it has increased the length required to stop. The only benefit I have experienced is it helps you stop in a fairly straight line.

I agree completey with stogieluvr regarding todays drivers being undertrained, underskilled and over confident. And somehow I just can't accept that to make them better drivers or riders they should be given saftey features that compensate for their lack of attention or skill.
Christ every time I'm on the highway during a winter storm it's always the 4wd's and SUV's that are lying on their roofs in the ditch because many of todays drivers believe the added traction 4wd offers somehow suspends the laws of physics... so you can't tell me ABS doesn't give the motorcylist who just got his/her license without any training or real life experience a false sense of his/her ability and security.

Again, just my .02 cents and I only respond as I am responded to. )
Red9 makes some good points here. If a new rider thinks that ABS will make up for shorcomongs in good riding technique and safe riding practices, "using your head" they are in for a rude and painful shock. Certainly Red9 is dead on right about the drivers of 4x4's and SUV's!

This thread prompted some spirited discussion about the virtues, and occasional drawbawbacks, of ABS. Good information was provided from all points of view, and it's up to the individual to set their priorities and make their own choices.

I respect Red9's viewpoint, and apologize for insulting him. I could have found a better way of expressing a rebuttal.

Front Brake = Seamless - ! NEVER an issue for me - I have practiced many emergency stops and at most ALL SPEEDS - works smooth - not noticeable - full control - it even leaves a light rubber mark on the road BUT NOT lockup slippage - (Nothing like cars or the bike rear brake ABS pulsing BS)

Rear Brake can grab & let go when JUST coming to a stop sign / red light and laying on the rear brake too heavy - again useless to me ... even dangerous if you don't expect it (Front brake a must in that case or you'll go through the stop line) (I know I didn't leave enough stopping distance ... but it happens)

(Wish I disarm the rear only)

No Lie! I'm alive today because of ABS brakes.Had a deer jump out in front of me while heeled over in a curve at 65 mph.Stood on the back brake,no lockup, got it upright just before impact, hitting the deer dead center.Totalled the 2011 softtail, but was uninjured due to being able to bleed off enough speed,in full control,to keep from being killed outright.Like hitting a brick wall. The new Road King..........wouldn't have even looked at it without ABS.
