08 Electra Glide Ultra Classic :-)
I have to replace the battery for sure - but upon checking things out I decided to remove the negative battery cable while the engine was running. The engine died. Is this normal, shouldn't the engine keep running - just like a car or pick-up, my riding mower etc...? Or is this an overload or some other type of protection circuit built into the regulator?
pulling the cables from the battery on a running bike can blow your charging system
there are really sensitive important electronics on your bike- pulling the power can cause all those fields to collapse, resulting in all kinds of mayhem, possibly damage.

Thank You mkguitar. Time to replace the old with the new battery I have. Oh, I have had the battery tender on for a couple of days now. Started the engine and the voltage measured across the terminals is 14+vdc. Seems the charging system is still working, hopefully I haven't damage anything by removing the cable.
That's what I was wondering too?
What was the point if you don't mind in pulling the cable while it was running?
Was it an accident, or?
Oh and BTW, I think that I am going to go ahead and get a battery for mine this year too.
It is 3.5 years old and the last time it was started was 6 weeks ago and then it acted weak but then took right off so I think that was the first sign, and for $100 bux, it's better to get somewhere you don't want to be so, change time.
In today's world of electronics, you should never disconnect a battery cable with the engine running. To easy for voltage spikes to knock out something every expensive. Most automotive computers operate with 5 volt reference signal, unhook a battery with a charging voltage of 14 volts, and guess what happens when you see that little spark when that cable is loosened ? Back in the day, was a lot different than today when it comes to electronics.
That's always been a way to test the charging systems in autos.
If the car stayed running, the alternator was working. Meaning the ignition was being powered by the current from the alternator, not the battery.
Back in the days before we could all afford to have a multi-meter in the tool chest.
that was way back , not good to do on cars any more , to many electronins and ecm's and such , I work on equipment to pay for my toys and we even have to have a laptop to work on them now days , the old days are gone
