Default Tuning issues with a Propipe...

A while back I had started a thread where I was having problems with backfiring from a V&H Propipe. I have a custom map installed and so to be specific, I took it out and rode it, trying to find exactly when it occured. I noticed when the bike was cold there was practically no occurence of backfiring. However, when the bike was warmed up, every time I squeezed the clutch to shift, or when I throttled up and let off, I could hear a pop from the exhaust. I took it back, and the tech changed the settings and this seemed to improve the popping except for maybe an occasional occurance. I want to be realistic about this and I don't know what I should expect. I know there is a cackle as the engine winds down during shifting or a release of the throttle. Does an occasional pop/backfire/Decel pop matter ? Of course I want a good operation from the system, Thats why I had a stage 1 (SE A/C, SEPST, Propipe, Custom MAP) done to the bike. But finding a good medium between my riding style and the engine map, has made me question buying a Propipe to begin with. Secondly, there is no guarantee that this won't occur with another exhaust system. Is there anyone who can shed some light into this for me...? The tech doesn't believe there is an exhaust leak.

yep, get it tuned right and that will eliminate 90 % of it.

Decel popping is the result of a lean condition, either an exaust leak, or problem with the map. Or both

If the map is the problem, from what I learned, you should try backing off the decel enleanment settings

each sound can have a different source/cause

whether there is harm depends on the reason

#1 suspect is always a leak, as the throttle is closed, high vacuum will suck fresh air into the exhaust tract through leaks and pop, pop
-( some header systems experience air being sucked in the left tailpipe and pop in the right).

mapping is other wise the cause/solution too much or too little fuel and ignition timing under certain circumstances.

so that's tuner-world.

leaks can often be found at home with the smoke from a cigarette tip, place it near the pipe joints and watch for the smoke being disturbed.

V&H does a lousy job with their O2 sensor bungs, and on most of their pipes, the sensor isn't far enough into the pipe to allow the sensor to do its job. V&H has been alerted to this issue by several professional tuners, and they've indicated that they don't care and have no intention of changing their pipes.

With all that said, it sounds like you have an exhaust leak.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I may be getting another dyno/map at a different dealer...

I have a Pro Pipe and the PCV canned map from Fuel Moto. No issues. I am changing out the Pro Pipe however, for a quieter dual set up this year. Fuel Moto hooked me up again with Mufflers and retuned my PCV for me. Check with Jamie or Keith. Good Folks.
