Never say never on the splines wearing out on the shifters. I have helped a number of people on the road with shifters that have come loose. It is usually a touring bike and the rider has no tools, even with all the space! They do come loose and if they are left loose they will wear out the splines. When removing a shifter it is best to remove the bolt completly then wiggle the shifter off. If you look close enough, you will see that the bolt seats just below the splines, pulling off will damage them and cause problems when replacing.better safe than sorry!

Can't be twice as fast as they are on the same shaft. Dan
Dan, I thought it was kinda retarded too BUT......................

Just try it dude - the shifting is much more positive - never have to "double shift".

And it rarely "falls" into neutral.

The extra weight of the arm and pedal makes the shaft movement much more reliable and defined.

Have yet to miss a gear upshifting or downshifting with just a tap.

I swear it was like getting a new tranny

Has ANYONE ever done this besides me??????????????????

I removed my rear shifter and installed the chrome cover on my 06 Ultra.
But someone told me the shifter lever will eventually strip the teeth off (cheaply made), so he said carry the rear shifter you remove in your saddlebags. That way you can chage it on the road if needed.
That guy is full of horse hockey, never ever have I had or even heard of a stock shift lever stripping.
I've ripped up 2 heel shifter levers, the shaft they are on, and the arm on the trans within 12,000 miles. Yeah cheaply made(in China). Second gear is fun!

Lock-Tite your bolts and splines.

Ive stripped out 4 levers on my bike. Finally went to the billet levers. I was stripping both the levers and the shaft. I even tried loctiting everything which worked best till i went to the bilet levers.
