Hey all, well, more problems with my 2002 ultra classic. After trying to fire it up, I notice smoke comming up from the seat, turns out the battery terminals came loose and were arking?? Who knew. Anyways, after tightening up the battery terminals, it fired right up, then taking it for a few mile spin, I come home to see a good size puddle of oil, and the trail it left as I backed out. Seems once it warmed up the oil leak stopped. So.....It was in the low 30's or so today, so what gives? Does it take time to warm up and all thje gaskets seal or what? Seems to come from the primary. I dunno. The more money I put into the is thing the more things come up..........Is this normal or do I need to ride it more. Depending on the weather, and what bike I'm riding, this one gets rode once a week at a minimum. Any thoughts?
The oil leak is comming from the left mid to rear. Oil is puddling up and looks like fresh honey. No signs of oil leak afger riding for a bit, just seems if it sits for a week or so and gets cold, it pukes oil when I start it up. I guess it's got oil in it.....Time to worry when it doesn't leak anymore? Ha....Ha..Ha........Sorry, that was my attempt at sarcasim (sp?)
My old EVO does that. It comes out of the crankcase vent. There is some kind of check ball in there. If I run it often, it doesn't do it. If I leave it set a while it does. But my oil on the floor is on the right side.
Well hell, what do I do? Tighten something up? I can track this bike like a wounded deer with the oil trail this thing leaves behind. So much so that I think I might check the primary to make sure I still see oil in there. The oil that leaks looks like brand-new fresh oil. Just had the starter clutch replaced so theres SYN-3 in the primary from the dealer. Why the hell would it leak like this? Freah oil, fresh gaskets, just serviced......
Suggest you have to find out where the oil is coming from. First thing to do is completely clean the engine area, then run the bike let it sit since it seems to happen when it sits and then look at the engine to see if you can determine where the oil is coming from although it does sound like the primary. Some dealers have a die that you can put in the oil to colour it so that you can at least determine the source. One fairly common problem is stripped threads in the primary cover housing and if that has happened you could have a leak at the bolt that is going into the hole with the stripped thread. one of mine was stripped when a burnt out clutch was replaced, but i was lucky it was one of the top ones, so no leak. Before you run the bike dont forget to make sure there is oil everywhere there should be. Just had a thought, you have that stupid pipe thread drain plug on your bike, whilst you say the leak isn't continuous you might want to check it anyway. The newer bikes have a traditional bolt with an O ring so some of the newer mechanics may not be familiar with how the old drain pug goes bak in.

Reason: Additional thought
Have you checked the transmission? Clues are "looks like fresh honey" and "looks like brand-new fresh oil". If you have gear lube in the transmission that's what it would look like.
