With the Biketronics package you will retain the handlebar controls for the radio ... however you will loose the ability to use the passenger controls located on the tour pak
( if you have them .. no great loss ) and, you should also be able to choose a head unit that has an "audio in" input so that you can plug an I-Pod in should you get one in the future. Most of the head units today will play CD's and Discs burned in the mp3 format. A CD will generally hold about 20 songs while a Disc loaded with mp3's can hold in excess of 200 songs ... that should keep you in tunes for long ride ... Hope this helps.

It's good to see some other vinyl believers lurking around here....

Replacing your OEM cassette radio with an OEM CD radio is a simply plug and play swap on an EGC.

However, as suggested above, you'll have a wide variety of aftermarket head units to choose from using the Biketronics interface module while retaining handlebar controls.

MP3 is the best bet. Small & endless capacity. Just one thing, make sure it's a high output player. I had a Sony Walkman MP3 which puts out 5mw. At 50+ mph it was pretty low. I switched to a Cowon iaudio9 which puts out 30mw. Night and day at high speed. I think Ipods put out around 25-30ma but Apple doesn't list the power specs.

What kind of hoop jumping and reengineering will I have to do to get one to work with my handle bar controls? Once that's in place I'll add an amp and speakers.
If you want to stay with the stock Harley radio, but one with CD, it is a "Plug-N-Play" set up. Get the updated CD radio (76164-04, MSRP $844.95). Or if you can install the Ultra radio (76146-04, MSRP $1199.95) with CB and intercom. You would need to get the Ultra Harness, add the gas tank center console with the headset plug and passenger plug. The radio is obsolete from Harley, but some dealers still have some in stock if you look. New they come with instructions. Or you can find some on eBay. There is an Ultra Radio on eBay right now (Item number:120869593407).

It depends on what you want to do.
