Cassette vs CD
With the Biketronics package you will retain the handlebar controls for the radio ... however you will loose the ability to use the passenger controls located on the tour pak
( if you have them .. no great loss ) and, you should also be able to choose a head unit that has an "audio in" input so that you can plug an I-Pod in should you get one in the future. Most of the head units today will play CD's and Discs burned in the mp3 format. A CD will generally hold about 20 songs while a Disc loaded with mp3's can hold in excess of 200 songs ... that should keep you in tunes for long ride ... Hope this helps.

Replacing your OEM cassette radio with an OEM CD radio is a simply plug and play swap on an EGC.
However, as suggested above, you'll have a wide variety of aftermarket head units to choose from using the Biketronics interface module while retaining handlebar controls.

MP3 is the best bet. Small & endless capacity. Just one thing, make sure it's a high output player. I had a Sony Walkman MP3 which puts out 5mw. At 50+ mph it was pretty low. I switched to a Cowon iaudio9 which puts out 30mw. Night and day at high speed. I think Ipods put out around 25-30ma but Apple doesn't list the power specs.

A classic Denon DP60L
My 01 EGC has the old cassette head unit which needless to say sucks (with loud slurping sounds) but I like the handle bar controls. I'd like to switch it out with a newer stock CD unit and I know it would be too much to ask that it's just a plug and play swap. What kind of hoop jumping and reengineering will I have to do to get one to work with my handle bar controls? Once that's in place I'll add an amp and speakers.
It depends on what you want to do.
