Yes there are other heat shields available. someone will chime in with more info on that. Yes you can usually wrap headers and still get the shields back on. Are you sure it's your left leg? With the under the bike crossover, I thought the left side wasn't a problem any more.
Buying headers with ceramic coating makes a big difference but the best option is to not create the heat in the first place. Get a good tune so the engine runs less hot to begin with.
I'm right there with you. I put Rinehart TD's on my 08 Ultra and have the same issue. Last year was not fun on those 90 and 100 degree days stuck in traffic. What helps a little when stopped is to put your right leg down and move your left foot up as far as you can on your floorboard.
those 'no more fried thighs' wont help this though. the problem is on my inner left leg. the crossover doesnt go under the bike, the rear jug pipe comes directly out the left side.
I had the same pipes with the same problem. Rode the bike home left leg on fire no way to get my leg off the pipe. The dealership was able to give me full credit towards another set of pipes. This time went with V & H Headers on my 110 motor.
Heat shields won't work with this problem. My buddy has Rinehart TD's & they stick out to far from the frame on the rearward bend on the left side. I have Freedom Perormance TD's & they hug the frame much better so I don't feel the heat. There is about a 2" difference between mine & his & it saves my skin!
