One thing you don't have to do is remove the lowers. The stock HD lowers channel air into the cooling fins and do not cause any cooling/engine overheating issues. I have an '04 Ultra and have never had trouble with engine overheating under any driving conditions regardless of the ambient temperature.
That being said, if you're using the flat vinyl lowers that attach to the engine guards ("crash bars"), you CANNOT use thos when the temperature is over 50 degerees f. It says so in the owner's manual, and from personal experience on my police bike I can attest to that. The motor will overheat quickly at low speeds and start pinging.

I don't know if you can still get a MM Injection download from Harley dealers anymore.

It requires a "Scanalyzer" which Dealers needed to program MM's.

The good news is that those downloads weren't very EPA friendly back then which means they worked!

My 2000 ( S/E Road Glide,) came with the Stage II download from the factory. The cams were upgraded 203's which have since been changed to Andrews 26's, the bike came with the high flow intake and currently runs a modified Supertrapp exhaust.

It runs beautifully and just turned 104,000 miles.

For the expense though, an adjustable system, ( like a PC,) makes more sense to me in your situation. Just buy a new one and install it.

You've got to stop the pinging.

can a programable ECM (PC or other) be installed without doing a Stage 1 air cleaner, exhaust upgrade? Is it worth the expense? I have a stock 2010 FLTRX and want to get rid of the ping, not interested in any more at this point. Thanks and sorry for hijacking the OP's thread.

yes

maybe ( depends on how you like to spend your money, and you can see from this thread that settings have many variables)

I feel your pain, my 09 pinged when stock under certain conditions ( 2800~3200 rpm up 6% grades) I installed nightrider.com XIEDS ( $125) which solved that.
And allowed me to go to high flow air cleaner and pipes to good effect.
