Default Royal Purple Question

I bought a bottle and after getting home I read it says not to use in wet clutch. The clutch system is under the primary cover. So i am safe to assume I can add this stuff to the tranny? Or should I return it

best not to mix fluid types/brands

If changing to a new brand primary fluid ( in which the clutch is bathed), drain the primary and work the clutch to make sure the old stuff all goes- if you are in there anyway, you could pull the discs and plates to get the old stuff off.

Once clean, soak in the new stuff.

and put back together

I bought the Bike used and plan on putting Mobil 1 syn 20/50 in primary. I was going to put the Rp 75/90 in tranny.

You can use it in the engine. Not in the primary. I use plain old rotella t in the primary. It meets the JASO spec for wet clutches. And it's cheap.

I've used RP 75/90 in my transmission with no problems. I use RP 20w50 in the engine. I use HD Formula + in my primary. I'm back to using 75 or 85w whatever dino oil in my transmission. Everything works great.

sometimes it seems like pulling teeth to get an answer doesn't it? yes, you can use it in the tranny. i too use formula + in the primary. change it out every engine oil change even though the book says it can go 10k. it just feels better after putting fresh fluid in. the tranny, i take out to 10k (every other engine oil change).

just makes it easy to remember, change engine and primary every 5k, and change tranny on the 10k mark.....

Which RP product are you planning on using in the tranny? RP is rich in moly, which is an excellent friction modifier that is good for most mechanical applications but should be avoided in the primary. The reason is that the clutch disks need a certain amount of friction to work properly and moly increases lubricity. I would use their MaxGear hypoid gear oil in the tranny (85w140 works well), 20w50 non-MC oil in the engine, and a good fossil engine oil like Castrol GTX 20w50 or Rotella T in the primary. Formula+ is HD's offering for the primary, but IMO is overpriced for an environment that doesn't need an expensive oil.

BTW, I agree with Skratch's service-interval recommendations on the primary and tranny.

I plan on 20/50 Mobil 1 Syn in engine and Primary And RP max gear syn in the tranny

I have used Mobile 1 20w50 MC oil in the primary and RP 75w90 in the transmission for a few years now with no problems. In fact the RP resulted in a quieter transmission as compared to dino gear lube. 06EG
