Reckless Fairing mounting brackets question ???
I am thinking of purchasing a Reckless fairing for my 2010 Road King, but I am unsure of how this fairing is secured to the bike. I've read that it is secured with allen bolts, but I would like to see pics of exactly how. I have the HD Custom Touring Front Bullet Turn Signal Kit (69577-06), and I am afraid that the fairing won't work with these signals. Anybody have any insight or pics? Here is what my turn signals look like:
Those signals will have to be re-located...as well as the chrome cover on top of the nacelle...Reckless suggest you replace the custom chrome cover with a RK standard handlebar cover...
Most aftermarket fairings use the quick release windshield mounts on either side of the headlight nacelle....if you don't have a windshield now you will need to buy the mounting kit at the dealer....$29.95...consist of 4 bushings, 4 studs, 4 washers and 4 chrome acorn nuts.....I can give you a part # if needed.

Anyhow, I have already ordered the fairing. I think it will work as I am still able to use my stock windshield with these turn signals. Fingers crossed!
Will do. I hope to get my fairing by the middle of next week. Once I get it hooked up, I'll take it for a spin and then write a review. I ordered the black gelcoat model w/ Sony CD/AUX/USB head unit, Polk db691 6x9 speakers, Vibe 500 watt amp, and 5" smoke visor. All of the these components are from Reckless and they should come installed.
Now, for the fairing:
(First, let me preface all of this by saying that the fairing does work with my turn signals. Not even close to hitting them.)
Arrival/Packaging:
The fairing arrived in a large box and it was wrapped securely in bubble wrap. However, there was a good bit of room in the box for the fairing to rattle around in.
When I got it all unwrapped, I noticed the head unit had come loose from the harness on one side. I was pretty ticked at first! However, I took the fairing apart, adjusted it a bit, and everything was fine. Could have been worse if the whole stereo had come loose from the harness.
All of the components (aside from the slight head unit mishap) are very neatly and securely mounted (i.e. speakers, wiring, amp, antenna).
Manuals/wiring:
All of the manuals for the components are nicely placed in one bag along with brief instruction on how to wire the quick connect to the bike. Instructions had very fuzzy black and white pics, but its really not that hard to hook up. It simply involves one wire to the battery positive terminal, one to the negative, and one that has to be spliced into one of the bike's accessory wires. The accessory wire is an orange w/ white stripe wire that is bundled in the main wiring harness located under the seat near the battery. Took a while for me to find it, but its pretty simple after that. Simply crimp the provided connectors to the positive and negative wires, hook them up to the battery, and use the provided quick splice connector to tap into the accessory wire. Very easy. I ran the quick connect under the seat and tank console. You could also run it under the tank as well.
The sound:
The sound is really great in my opinion. I'm not sure if its from the extra amp, but it gets pretty loud without distortion if your bass levels aren't too high. The bass was the only area that left me wanting more, but you can't expect too much from two 6x9's. I'm used to a full system with a 12" subwoofer in my truck, so I guess I'm a little spoiled in that area.
The headunit has great features all listed on the Reckless website, but some of the iPod controls can be a little confusing.
Mounting brackets:
This is the one area that I would try to improve on if I were employed at Reckless. Maybe it was just my bike and my respective fairing, but getting the fairing to easily slide into the mounting grommets was not happening for me. Takes some patience. You must make sure that your bolts that secure the mounting grommets are loose to allow for some wiggle room. Once its on, just tighten the four bolts up and you're good to go. I will say that I think the fairing sits a little too upright/forward for my liking. I may try to re-drill holes for the mounting brackets that will allow the fairing to tilt back about half an inch or so.
The ride:
Took it for a spin today with speeds up to about 70 mph. The fairing is very sturdy and the tunes were still easily heard. Couldn't tell much difference in turning and handling. I actually felt like my bike handled better. Maybe due to decreased wind against the body or downforce from the fairing. Very little head buffeting with the 5" shield (lowered C&C seat, 5'11"). I feel that a shield any shorter would probably give me more head buffeting. I have never rode with a fairing before, and I was really liking the decreased wind across my ears and the ability to hear my engine much better.
Overall Opinion:
To this point I am VERY happy I purchased this fairing. I think it is very sturdy and constructed well. I will have to get some more riding under my belt with it to make a final verdict on the purchase. But for now, I think it is a very good product, especially considering the price compared to it's competitors.
Whew... that was a lot of typing. If I left out anything else that you may be wondering about, just let me know. I'll try to post pics in the near future.
