Default Need Some Help

I did a few searches, and came up with nothing.

My bro-n-laws 1999 Road King (police) with Magnetti Marelli EFI is crapping out after running fine for an hour or two. Does this every time now. Used to be just a hiccup or two, and keep going, but now the bike barely limps home. He describes the feeling as loss of power, like no fuel.

The bike's throwing no codes. Bike has fuel in the tank. Plugs look good. New voltage regulator, crank position sensor, and engine temp sensor. Starts, idles, & runs ok when cold, or even after it craps out and we let it sit half an hour. One thing I notice is fuel pump is really loud, much louder than my 2004 RK with Delphi EFI. I took the bike for a ride, and I could hear the fuel pump buzzing over the engine and Monster Ovals. I took the gas cap off, to see if the sound got louder, but it didn't. (Maybe the pump was below the gas?)

Should the fuel pump on the MM EFI bikes be this loud? Any other ideas?

All help/advice much appreciated.

JR

I have a '99 Road King, also with M/M injection. It, too, is louder than newer bikes, but seems normal.

However, as to your problem, I'd take a look at the spark plugs. They might need cleaning or replacement.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.

Would a plugged up fuel filter cause the fuel pump to make noise? And crap out after an hour of riding? Is there anything else in there, like a bad check valve, or bad pressure regulator that would cause the fuel pump noise? If it is the fuel pump, is there an aftermarket pump available? I'm not seeing fuel pumps in the catalogs.

Much thanks again,

JR

Just a quick follow up here, for the archives/searches:

We swapped in a new fuel pump and a new filter today. The replacement fuel pump for this 1999 FLH with MM EFI is part number 61342-95A, and looks a little different from the original pump we took out. Before, we could clearly hear the old fuel pump over the engine/monster ovals while riding. Now, when we start the bike the new fuel pump is almost silent. We can barely hear the new pump just before we hit the start button. It sounds & starts like my 2004 RK with Delphi EFI, just not as quick starting. The new fuel filter came with new shaped fuel hoses for inside the tank, regular black fuel lines, not the corrugated plastic hoses in my Delphi EFI bike. We used a small set of tile nippers to set/crimp the new fuel hose clamps, and the nippers worked fine, nice & tight. We did a 30 minute test ride and the bike ran fine.

JR

loud fuel pump, MM fuel pump, fuel pump noise, noisy fuel pump,
