What Lowcountry Joe said, read the owners manual. Why would one NOT go to the manual for advice, since it's written by the company that designed and built your motorcycle!

I was told to very the RPMs but keeps it under 65 for the first 100 miles. That's what I had planned to do anyway. Bike runs great. I didn't changevthe oil or anything until the 1,000 mile service. Which was only a week from the day I got it anyway. Yes, I rode the crap out of it.

I may have went to the extreme. I rode her like I was 90 years old for the first 7500 miles. Then I had my last dealer service and decided to open her up and see what she's made of. Wrapped the speedo half a dozen times and got it out of my system!

I'd keep it out of 6th for 300 miles and do a lot of slow rolls up on the throttle and slow rolls down the rpm band to cool and harden the rings you heated up. Keep her under 80 for 300 miles and after that have fun.

I'm **** so I'd also change oil and filter at 500. I think book says 1k.

On the one new Harley I've ever owned ('03 RK), I did what the manual recommended and it had no mechanical issues and never used a measurable amount of oil between 3000 mile changes.

IMO, if the people who have been building these bikes for well over 100 years don't know how to break them in, nobody does. But that's just my own personal opinion, and you know what they say about opinions...
