Default Break-in mileage?

What is the break-in mileage of a new 2012 SG. Salesperson told me not to pass 50 mph for the first 50 miles on the bike. He did say to vary the load during this time, but didn't mention anything after 50 miles. The reason I'm asking is that I want to get it dyno tuned as is with TTS. My understanding these things run on the lean side from the factory.

oh, some guys who know all the magic racing tricks will say to run it really fast and really slow and that'll make it the fastest bike on the block.

I keep my stuff for a while and break in motors like I plan on keeping the bike for a long time ( 'cause I do).

I vary the load and the rpms for the first 50 miles and beyond.

I usually change oil and filter at 50, 100, 300 and go to synthetic oil at 1000 miles- which is very conservative.

Not until I have over 1000 miles on the bike will I start to open it up and rev quickly to high rpms or cruise at a steady rpm for long periods- I also snap the throttle closed on occasion, the resulting high motor vacuum will increase top end oiling.

in addition, I would suggest waiting to make changes, ( such as a tuner) many of which violate the warranty-

That's what I do.

It's in the owners manual. If I remember correctly, just don't exceed 4k RPMs for 100 miles. and of course vary speed and don't lug motor. Check your manual, it is spelled out there.

With my 2011 Limited they told me no dyno tune until I got 1k miles on the bike. I just picked up my 08 Roadking with a new rebuilt bottom end & they told me to keep the rpm's under 3500 for the next 500 miles & not to go over 55 mph. I'm not sure what the reasoning is on the speed though because I can control the rpm's with the transmission. Anyhow, I just decided to baby it for the first 500 miles or so & then let her rip.
Some say to ride it like you stole it from the get go....

I figure the 50 mile spiel is to make sure nothing of importance falls off since an $8/hr guy did the PDI. After that I ride em like I stole it.

I have done the break-in straight by the book(owners manual) and I have completely ignored the manual if not outright done the exact opposite. I have never been able to tell a difference either way. Just do the regular maintenance and you should be fine either way. I think it attests to the quality of the machine.

I did not exceed 3000RPM and did not hold it at steady speeds for long lengths of time.

I agree however go up to S&S cycle web site and read what the motor experts say. It's all about heat cycling those rings.

Is it so difficult to just read and follow the owner's manual during break-in? Your salesman did not design your bike. Your salesman probably cannot afford a Harley. Who gives a **** what he says? Read the damn manual.

My dealer told to keep it under 100 for the first 500 miles.
