Default do i really need an EFI

Decided on Rineharts but haven't decided on 3.5 or 4 so I called Rinehart to get some additional information.. I was told if I buy Rinehart slip on mufflers, I need an EFI and I should get the ThnderMax and it cost 1000.00. If this is the case, I will pass on the Rinehart's. What say you????

Bunk. Just buy a set of VIEDs for $100, plug them in and ride happy.

That advice does not make any sense at all. If you actually called Rinehart, they are in the business of selling mufflers, not EFI modules. Hmmmmm...

If you are ONLY changing mufflers and retaining the stock header AND stock air cleaner- you will likely need no tuning compensation.

IF you are changing mufflers AND header pipes you may need tuning compensation.

IF you are changing headers, mufflers and air cleaner ( to a high flow) you almost certainly WILL need tuning compensation.

My choice for about $125 are nightrider.com XIEDS ( pick the ones for your year and model).

IF you think you will ever also be changing cams or doing headwork- then you should have a more complex device.

I do not use any of the tuners, but the Thundermax gets fewer questions and/or complaints than other devices here at the forums.

Not necessarily true, although a good idea. According to the experts at American Iron Mag. they have done numerous exhaust and A/C changes without a tuner with no ill effects. Your ECM will adjust, as long as you do one, then ride for several on and off cycles to set ECM then do the other. I did a tuner, but I plan on doing future upgrades.

A thundermax would change your life! It's a must have sooner or later. Stick with rinehart, do it right, do it once. Don't let that turn you off.

Hmmmm, funny, I already new this info but stopped at the Rinehart shop at Sturgis last year just to see if they were just trying to sell me something. They told me if I did anything more than slip ons, I would have to do a tuner. They recomended the Thundermax, which by the way is a great piece of electronics. They never tried to sell me anything I didn't need.

If your bike is currently stock, your bike meets all the noise and emissions regulations, which means it probably runs hot, as the air/fuel ratios are lean. Changing your mufflers will alter the current settings and may make it run yet more lean. By doing nothing else, you are relying on the stock EFI to compensate, something it is not designed to do! I personally wouldn't alter an EFI bike without compensating properly for the changes.
