Default Enough is Enough!!

Time to change the oil on the SG so I went to the dealer to buy the 4 qts of oil (NON-Syn) and a black filter. I almost choked when they told me the oil was now $8.50 (incl tx) a quart! The total for all would be around $45.
For the heck of it I asked what they charge if the service dept. did the work, hold on to your shorts, they want $100 plus tax!! Are they out of their minds?
My car takes 7 qts of oil and I get the oil plus filter changed for $52.
I'm tired of being raped by the dealer.
Automobile 20W-50W costs $4.95 a qt. at my local parts store. Although my understanding is that MC oil has some different additives compared to car oil but I can't understand why MC oil should cost almost double.
Sorry to rant but I just had to get it off my chest. It is what it is and we are not going to change it.
It's really a shame what's going on with the economy in this wonderful country.

Uhhh - OK. You are complaining about $8.50 oil when you have a Stage 1, SE slip-ons and had your bike dyne tuned??? Not to mention whatever else you have done to your bike. The dyno tune itself says to me that you care about your bikes performance... And your complaining about the price of oil?

And about the oil change... You can't expect to have a dealer (even for a car) perform an oil change for the cost of oil..

So many people today want everything for nothing... It blows my mind sometimes. It's business people.

Be sure to get 20W-50 that is specific to air-cooled motors.

Yep, exactly!

If $45 is gonna break your bank, then you really need to re-assess your priorities.

I don't understand what the OP's performance upgrades have to so with the complaints of the Kool-Aid company's raping us for everything with the Harley name on it. Because he can afford a dyno tune he shouldn't complain about the price of Harley oil?
3.5 quarts of oil @ $8.50 = $29.75 plus a ~$15 filter comes out to around $50. And the stealer wants over a hundred for an oil change. $50 bucks for changing oil seems to be a little excessive.
I don't think many of us here expect something for nothing but do like to get out money's worth from time to time which is why I do my own service and the stealer only sees my bike for warranty work or something I can't do.
BTW....my Cummins turbo diesel takes 12 quarts of oil and a complete service (which includes much more than just an oil change) comes in at less than 80 bucks. That's why the dealer does the truck and I do the scoot.

Just my 2 cents.

You're right, enough is enough. But some of us figured that out long ago.

Yeah, a dealer & some manufacturers will tell you there's "different additives" in "motorcycle" oil, but it just ain't that different. I have a 25 year old FXR that's never had anything except Castrol dino oil in it. It's stroked, cam'ed, runs 10.5:1 compression, & is tight & strong today. "Car oil" hasn't hurt it a bit, & it doesn't cost $8.50 a quart.

I agree that what's happening to the country is a shame. I thought the recent recession would wake more people up. Guess I under estimated the amount of dumb-*** in America...........

I'm with you Brother and sorry to see you arnt getting a little more sympathy here but as you say, It is what it is ....
I suggest you look at some of the thousands of oil threads here and pick an oil and do it yourself.I use Mobil 1 Syn. Remember we are all in this together and there are alot more things to be worried about than the price of oil and service. Do what you can to your bike to save the money for work on your bike that you CAN'T do... Good Luck.... God Bless America and those that love and truly care about it

I have run Shell Rotella oil for as long as I remember, in my Evo and Twin cam engines. Have put over 80,000 on every one of them. Never had a problem caused by oil. Walmart has it for $13.00 per gallon. I wonder who makes harley oil, The lowest bidder for the current contract period. As long as people pay the price, the dealer will smile and be a friend for life

I do not have the space nor all the tools for doing service work on my HD, but I can do my own oil changes. I use the scavenger oil change too, so I get all the dirty oil out, and use 20-50 M-1 V twin.
HD dealers are a business and service work don't get done for free. Accessories and stuff like shirts, I mean a button down shop shirt $65.00 it is a way to keep their margins up and keep the doors open.
A 5K service is over $400 at my dealer, my Indy does it for 219.00 and less if no oil/filter service.

Ride safe~
