You're exactly right - I think there's a lot of guys including myself that save where we can to save up or afford the true duals, the big bore, etc.. Does anyone really think HD has their own refinery?? I bet one of the more well known companies fill the HD oil jugs - anyone wants to pay more than double for the packaging go ahead - I won't.

 

Redline 20w/60 11.99 a quart I have alot of money invested in my scoot so it doesn't matter to me what oil costs.

 

I actually enjoy fussing with and over my bike. The price of the oil has never been a killer for me and of course the work is my own. I have the peace of mind knowing that things were done right.

 

Some of you guys are brutal with your flaming and are indirectly part of the reason why we are getting ripped-off because you continue to pay high prices for products that are not worth what we pay for.
$45 is not going to break the bank, it's a matter of principal. Do you really think that a qt of HD oil is worth $8.50? If you say "yes" then I will assume you are of the younger generation. I, on the other hand, have been riding for almost 50 years, probably longer than you are old. I have learned to appreciate the value of a dollar since I have grown up with an entirely different perspective. I can't say that I blame you for your point of view since I have a son in his late twenties who also would be willing to pay without complaining simply because he is growing up in a time where prices are outrageous so to him it's normal.
Are you happy, for example paying $4+ for a gallon of gas? Just because I can afford $45 doesn't mean others would not struggle to come up with that small amount. As long as we continue to pay we make it harder for those who can't.
I don't want the oil for free as was stated I simply want to pay a fair price. We are being gouged! Do you enjoy it?

 

My only comment to make here is when at your local shop paying for your oil don't go off on some tangent on how bad you're getting F-ed and how absurd and BS it is.

The guy at the counter didn't set the price, didn't force you to purchase, and now truly believes you're a douchebag.

I get cursed at, **** thrown at me, and have people make huge scenes over something I have no control over. My BIGGEST complaint about the people in this hobby/industry.

Two things-
First I feel the same about the price of oil and other things. Yes I have bought things for my bikes that were unnessasary. And yes I leave money set aside for maintenance. I do buy an oil filter that is friggen chrome plated, but don't complain about the price. I know it's ridiculous! I've considered buying a black one, but haven't yet. I hate the price of oil. Until I find another brand that I feel is as good or better I will continue to buy Harley oil. Looking at Redline or Amsoil. Prices seem to be about the same.
But look, secondly and most importantly, this guy started this conversation looking to vent. Turned to us for an ear to bend and blow off some steam. It wasn't even 10 minutes and someone knocked his dick in the dirt. It's one thing to disagree, but things get personal when you list off a guys stuff and act like his financial advisor.

 

Tell me, where did I say that I blamed the counter guy or any other employee at the shop? I think you are adding your own spin on this. Do you have a guilty conscience? If you are unhappy with the industry find another industry to work in just as I am seeking another brand of oil.
You see this is part of my point, you just stand there and take whatever is dished out. that's where you and I differ!

 

Well go buy a cheap JAP bike, where you can run wal mart oil in it, The best bikes cost money. Have a Great Day !!

 

I'm not gonna go off tonite to the people who trash the op's thread, and **** all over a legit question with unwanted nor unnecessary nasty mean comments, you as I just need to learn to accept the fact that many people here are butholes...........Beyond that I think your post is credible.

I went to my dealer a couple weeks ago to get a simple oil change. Full synth amsoil after labor would ave been 150 bucks......now the labor should be discounted on an oil change, we are not talking about a top end rebuild here, it takes the stealership less than 20 minutes with all the experience and proper tools to do an oil change on my electraglide, if 150 dollars is the cost total, then at 13 a quart x 4 (assuming you get the amsoil) is rounded to 60 bucks for oil, then 10 for a chrome filter.......70 so far ........so 80 bucks is left over for labor......to me charging 80 (which is a whole hour of labor) is excessive gouging.
A quarter hour would be 20 bucks ....the stealer should relly be charging only 90 total...for the oil change....seems the least they could do...if it makes them sleep better at night they could call it "owner appreciation discount" , now for all you moron stealership sympathisers screaming " it's just business" well it's not. The hd owners make huge mark ups on trades, pretty good money on new sleds, and if you still think they aren't raping people...well then buy a jacket, shirt or other apparel from them. My point here is that the MOCO dealers are not hurting at all, not to the least of which to the end that they need to *** rape me the full 1hours labor to do a simple 20 minute frigging job. Yes it sucks......that's why I brought the ten dollar oil filter wrench, the ten dollar filter and the full synth (Mobil 1 ) 20 w 50 oil from Advance Auto...on sale for 7.00 a quart.......total cost of my oil change less the wrench ........about 40 bucks for oil and oil filter, and 12 bucks on beer ( propper tools for this job) that I was going to drink anyway and half an hour of my Sunday morning.

Look I know we are as consumers accustomed to paying more at any dealership.....car, bike , whatever.....but that does not make the practice ok, and Harley should do right and offer specials on mini Tasks like oil changes or putting on an accessory like tips or pegs, ..the reason they do not is simple and threefold....Number 1 is ......Greed! Plain and simple....2) they do not want a hundred oil changes a day......reason being is most dealers not counting the large ones only employ an average of two full time mechanics per shift maybe three if they're lucky.....if everyone could afford to go to Harley for an oil change they would never be able to put new bikes together, or service the bigger jobs that take up the majority of their time on a daily basis....(not defending with reason number two just stating a fact I was told by an employee) and 3rd.....even though the dealers rape us on nearly every point of sale, the greedy ****ers also feel the sting of the recession we are all so very desperately trying to dig out of........so they look to recover it in every sale made including them oil changes.

Now I fully side with the op on this , its a sad word full of greedy bsstards, but only we can make a difference, it will never really change until all Harey owners start buying the oil from autozone and doing the little **** like oil changes at home, buy clothes online and cut out the dealer, there's great hd clothing on eBay for a third of the cost.....until we step up no one can expect anything to change. They will *** rape everyone that walks in the door, they will sell you a 80 dollar Chinese mirror with the MOCO logo or skull on it , and we will continue to pay it. It's Neanderthal consumerism, we want it, they got it, we buy it.

For the record I support the opinion of the op, the dealers suck and we do get raped, but it's more like misdemeanor assault because we have choices most of the time, you can't rape the willing......and it's not rape when you whip out the cash or credit card and bend over......more like prostitution........

Finally.......Harley synth and harley conventional motor oils that are branded with the magic logo that harley insists makes everything better than everything else, are not special.....they're all processed in the same refinery by Mobil ..........any one who buys the " additives are specially formulated " bs and purchases the hd branded Mobil 1 oil at the stealership for three times the price once they know the truth deserves to get raped by the dealer, bone dry with no lube or a kiss afterwards..........

Street runner you and I are cut from the same cloth , sadly we live in a different world content to allow the cost of durable goods and services to go through the roof because most people are content to take the easy lazy way out, or are simply illequipped to perform the task. As Long as the demand for the rape exists It will continue to take place. Sunday +beer+ just a litte pride and determination to stick it back to the stealerships , not only saves you about half or more on the money, but it also = a very clear message to the rapist.
