I am willing to pay a few dollars more for my services at the stealers or at the indy's as when I need my ride worked on to the level I cannot I want to have those people available and not closed or laid off. The stealer I deal with cuts me and other repeat customers slack on prices after a few visits, get gift cards, special unadvertised deals and so on so a few dollars more for oil is not going to break my bank and Yes, I do know it is all trade offs but as I stated, when I need them I want them open and available so I do not have to wait for days to get my ride in for repairs.
This is one of the problems with the US economy, yes, high prices force many to less value shops or stores and to DIY, the worst case is that we lose the trained techs that can fix our rides, good shops that do valuable work on the road and people laid off with nowhere to apply their trades.
I've been using Castrol GTX in all my bikes for the past 40 years with no problems. I buy it on sale, put it on a shelf, so I have it when I'm ready for it. To each their own. Just saying
You don't have to run v-twin oil in the Motor. use Motor oil... as long as it is 15w50 or 20w50... i buy NAPA full syn for $4.99/qt...i do buy the black HD filter but have used other brand including Fram, and others....70000 miles and thebike is fine...did cams at 50000 miles and everything looks great.... The V-TWIN has additives vot the primary uses...I use primary fluids... Your bike , your choice though...Many have opinions but when you lay your money down, it is ultimately your choice to drink the KOOL AID or not...
The most important thing is to actually change the fluids.
"Enough is enough!" I think that's what Willie G said when he didn't stick it out with the motor co for the big 50 and quit at 49 years. I think the old man might not like the price of HD oil himself, and I don't blame him.

These guy's are first rate imo. I've seen this article before. Good article! Thanks for posting. I used castrol GTX 20W50 in past years myself. Good Oil. I use Mobile 1 15W50 automotive oil now. I believe Synthetic oil is the way to go in air cooled Harley engines. JMO
The article you posted had this to say at the end.
There does, however, appear to be a legitimate argument for using synthetic and synthetic-blend oils over the petroleum based products
I guess the OP has not noticed the increase in gasoline prices. Blame the middle east or Iran. Not the MoCo. Now if you want a pretty good V-Twin Motor Oil, go to Auto Zone and buy Valvoline 4-stroke Motorcycle Oil, its designed for Air Cooled engines and has the JASO rating for the wet clutch. 4.75 qt. last time I did a rice burner service.
Uhhh - OK. You are complaining about $8.50 oil when you have a Stage 1, SE slip-ons and had your bike dyne tuned??? Not to mention whatever else you have done to your bike. The dyno tune itself says to me that you care about your bikes performance... And your complaining about the price of oil?
And about the oil change... You can't expect to have a dealer (even for a car) perform an oil change for the cost of oil..
So many people today want everything for nothing... It blows my mind sometimes. It's business people.
I agree
this used to be a forum with useful information of how to tips, parts information, and good information.
Now, its Harley Davidson bashing, dealer bashing, parts bashing, I'm smarter than you on tuning, you suck because you dont have what what I have crap.
I am an equal opportunity lubricator! If you look hard enough you will see Mobil 1 VTwin, Brad Penn, Castrol, and Kendall in my oil closet along with HD oils.
I do like the SYN3 as you can tell. When my dealer has a 20% off sale I always buy a case whether I need it or not. I have found it to be a good performing oil. But anything slippery and clean will be good performing.
