Hi all, I am new to the forums so please forgive me if i am asking a question that has already been covered. I have an 07 FLHT that i am swap seats on. The factory touring makes me feel a little cramped and the stock SG seat i bought used needs more comfort for both me and a passenger. I have a medium height detachable back rest that i run now. ultimately what i want is a seat that can be comfortable for an al day ride and fits my backrest. Any responses are greatly appreciated.
The stock seat on my 2010 FLHTK basically sucked. The seat pan is just too flimsy and the padding breaks down over time. After an hour I felt as though I was sitting on a board. I have had the HD Deep Bucket Sundowner on an '01 FLHTCUI. It was an improvement, but still a Harley seat. On my Limited I now have a Mustang Wide Touring. My impressions are that it sits you up 1/2'' higher than stock and 1/2'' more forward than stock. The seat pan is of much higher quality and quite a bit more rigid. It has better frame bumpers underneath for greater support. I got this one because I already had an HD rider's seat backrest and did not want incur any more cost than necessary. The Mustang seat has an opening for the backrest, however it is more forward than stock. I had to readjust the setting on the fender up one hole. This allows for more seating room for the back seat passenger. It sure rides a lot nicer. I can go longer in the saddle and another unique feature is that through the rigidness of the seat pan you get a better "feel" for the road through the seat/frame. It is like you are now "connected" and can fly by the seat of your pants.
If you consider the Russell Day Long in the classifieds, you need to find out the seller's height, weight, inseam, and what weight he submitted for the passenger. Russell custom builds their seats according to a detailed description of yourself and passenger weight. That is a good price, and worst case, likely to be less than five years old. But if he is heavy with a short inseam and you are not, you will not get the same level of comfort and distance from it. I am not affiliated with Russell Cycle Product but know there criteria to build you a seat and hope to have another next season.
I have the Mustang wide dual touring seat. The wife likes it as well as I do. Since I'm 5'7" I has the driver seat lowered by Mean City Cycles. Seats are a personal choice, you need to sit on some different ones to find one that works for you.
only thing i can say is stay away from diamond custom seats.. mark hartco doesn't listen to people or read emails.. you'll get whatever he has laying around... bad place to do business.
