ok so I got my back back good as new.. i have incredible top end from like 3 to 6 grand.. but crap for low end. i practically have to down shift to 4th at 60 to pick up speed.... im trying to figure out how i could get some more bottom end to it.. this is what has been done to it...
flywheel was lightend and balanced
ev 59 cam
crane ignition
ported heads
10.5 to 1 compression
s&s oil pump and pushrods
kibblewhite valves
barrnett clutch plates and spring
i still have the stock carb and have dumper straight pipes on there...
i just replaced the chain and sprocket in the primary... i wanted to put diffrent gear to get more lower end but the chain was too tight so we had to put a new stock sprocket back on...
I had an 91 flstf and had a similar setup, 10-1, head work, 2-1 exhaust, and a ev-7 cam but I had 3.37 gearing stock and it still needed downshifts in the same situations you describe. I had less weight and a more revving gear set up than you do. I pulled out the ev-7 cam and installed a ev-35. I lost 3-4 hp but gained a ton of throttle response and ridability. I might switch out to a ev-46 and a better exhaust if I was you.
I bet that came doesn't come on till 3k, and straight pipe doesnt help also, but thats a secondary problem or fault, I run open pipes and have run 2-1 much better but not what I feel you are talking about.
do you have stock bore and stroke? and just high comp piston. who did you porting? not saying its bad but a bad or mis engineered port job can kill performance.
Try lots of pasta and wine. Worked for my wife! Just kidding
Reminds me of an old joke. Women is complaining to her significant other that her breasts are too small and she wants them to be bigger. He tells her, "rub toilet paper on them every night". She says, "does that really work?" He says, " it worked for your azz!"
yea i had a ev 27 in there before i did all the motor work.. whats the range on a ev 35
An Andrews 35 is a 3 on the intake and a 5 on the exhaust. I don't know if they make it anymore but ill bet if you send them an e-mail concerning this they will give you the power band range and a recommendation for an alternate cam. I am guessing an ev-46 would be an alternate. The ev-3 is a fun little cam as well. Either one would be yards better than the 59 in your case. The straight pipes are not helping the part throttle response. If I remember correctly the 95 softtails had a 61t rear belt pulley that kinda sucked. You need to figure out what gearing you have.
