I changed from Mobil1 75-90w to Spectro 6speed tranny oil and its not only clunkier but fricken forget about neutral....when I get in the tranny to put my longer cable for my 14" apes, Im draining that **** out and going back to the M1 what a waste of $ !%$#@.
Okay Shredding rubber, I'm on the Redline website, which weight oil did you use, the heavy, the light weight, or super light weight? Thanks again....
Sorry to answer so late. I used the shockproof heavy. It looks like pepto bismol.
I know it's thick but it coats everything it touches so even when the bike cools it's on everything. I had severe gear in my bike prior to the red line and the neutral issue was still present, and when I changed it,even though it was only in for 5000 miles the viscosity has sheared down to water.
The shockproof has been in my bike for 7-8000 miles and the tranny dipstick is still coated, and it's hard to get it to drip.
It will probably slip right in if you do it while you're still rolling.
I do it with mine. It works, first time, every time. If I try it at a stand still. More likely to fight with it than not.
Okay everyone, here's a 500 mile update on the recent changes I incorporated into a bone-stock 2012 Street Glide with "missing/hard-to-find neutral" issues. I drained the tranny and primary oil and replaced whatever was in there with Redline products. At the same time, I dropped the stock clutch pressure plate and installed a billet component from AIM Corp along with a variable pressure clutch. (the variable pressure clutch is to support my engine build @ a later date-I chose the billet pressure plate due to a buddy of mine used one on his Ultra and it fixed his neutral problem as well.) Both have worked flawlessly since thier inception and I am greatful to all that contributed. If you are on a budget, I might suggest just trying the Redline Oil first, to see if that works, then proceed from there. Again, many thanks to all that contributed thier knowledge and experience.
Bel-Ray 85-140 Gear Saver works great. Much quieter, easier to find neutral and smoother feel. Im sure Amsoil, Redline SP or Mobil would all be great too. IMO the SYN3 or regular transmission fluids arent the ticket.
Recap the whole thing.
Neutral is somewhere between 1st and 2nd gear . no where else.
Best practice when at standstill looking for neutral is to roll the throttle just a tad. You will slip right in,,
Lose the heel shifter. Adjust your toe shifter for the Boots you wear the most since this adds or detracts from the feel.
Redline is your freind, I use in all 3 holes.
I go to the 20/60 in the heat of the summer out here, where road temps hit 130.
Done this practice with several of my scoots now. seems to work like a champ.
Just had my 1k service last week. Was difficult to find neutral before. Went with synthetic fluid and neutral is very easy to find now, moving or stopped.

Oh there are many neutrals in the trans. I have found them when I didn't want to on every bike I have ever owned. The 3-4 neutral really sucks because the guy you are racing flies right by you when you find it, lol!
Question: I find that slightly increasing RPM in first with the clutch pulled in (obviously) makes it much easier to find neutral. What would this indicate if anything? Too much crank run-out? Bad bearings?
Mechanically what is going on here that makes it easier to find neutral with slightly increased RPMs?
This is my 3rd Harley and the most difficult one to find neutral. With my other two, a RK & Dyna, all I had to do was to think about neutral and it would go right in. This one was more difficult from day one but then I thought it just took some getting used to and it seemed to get better for a time but now it is worse then ever.
The things I have tried with no apparent effect are;
Adjusting clutch
Slightly Varying levels of primary fluid
Mobil V-Twin in the primary and trans
Formula Plus in the primary and trans
Amsoil 20w 50 in the primary and Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 & 75w-140
I found some Red Line Heavy ShockProof locally and I am going to try it next change.
