I think one more test is in order. Try it on your best friend’s bike and if it fries his battery you need a new Tender. (and a new best friend)

Are you sure you are using a true tender and not a battery charger?

My 07 only sees a tender during the winter. About once a month I throw the tender on for a day or two and do the same thing a month later. Battery is still going strong and is five years old.

I've had the original battery in my bike since Oct 06. It's pretty much always on the tender jr. if it's not going to be ridden for more than 2 days. A couple of years ago I got to thinking about possibility of it malfunctioning and cooking the battery, or worse. So,I did exactly the same thing. I have it plugged into a timer. No worries now.

Older Battery Tenders are not the "smart" style. He may have an older one.

Any battery maintainer/tender sold as such floated the battery when it reached full charge. Age is of no consequence.

My oldest tender is 10 years old.

I lost track on how long I've been using a Battery Tender without any issues. I leave the Battery Tender connected anytime I'm not riding.

Well I think my cheap o battery tender from Wally World fried my battery. My first battery lasted close to 4 years. (07 Softail) Decided to try and get more life out of the replacement by using a tender... Now, i need another battery after a year and a half! Maybe the one I got is not a smart charger? or I damaged it by not connceting/disconnecting it in the right sequence...Live and learn...
