Extended service plan
I bought an ESP on my '09 SG when purchased new and although I haven't needed it much, I've used it twice I believe. Replaced a battery about a year ago and a radio a month ago all with no questions asked and no cash out of pocket. Oh, I used a different shop for the warrantee work then the shop I purchased bike and ESP at. I gotta say, my local dealer has EXCEPTIONAL service.
I bought the extended service plan for my 07 Ultra, as I put a lot of miles on . They had two levels, and i got the Platinum one which covered all wear parts in addition to repairs. I figured I saved about 40% off of retail pricing with it. I had warranty work performed on it and then for two more years of extended warranty. I broke even there so far, and it will be up in August.
The value of service, repairs, and warranty work so far has total over $10,000, and I'm out just under $6,000 in nearly five years of ownership. For me, it is a good, no great deal!
I be smiling!

Tech working on Sunday?
Second, as HOGDOC said, the dealer Service Dept. phones in the diagnosis and repairs necessary to seek approval for the repair claim. The ESP underwriter, CNA was the one when I had my ESP, approves or denies the claim--they also use independent auditors to visit the dealer from time to time if they question a specific claim.
