I know this is out of topic...but for the first time in my 40 years of riding in MIchigan I don't have to wear a helmet. And for the 20 years in the Military I had to wear a helmet in non helmet states per Uncle Sam. Just wonder about my touring foks and how they deal with it in the right to choose states they live in.
Michigan passes no Helmet Law!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW.
Hap
It feels great to ride without a helmet, so I understand why people do it. I am willing to risk the inherent dangers of biking, but I wear my FF helmet 99.9% of the time, to try to move the odds of survival in my favor.
For me, it all depends on the situation. If I'm in a no helmet state and putting around town, no helmet. If I get out on the actual highway for any distance, I'll throw on my half helmet. However if it's a long trip with major highways, interstate speeds, multiple days, etc, I wear a full open face helmet with a shield for more protection. Usually throw the half helmet in the tour pack....
So I wore a helmet my whole life, riding for 25 years and still do on my ATV. However the freedom I feel from not wearing a helmet while on my casual rides through the New Hampshire country side and to the beech is amazing. Nothing like the feeling. I have a real hard putting a helmet on these days. Let me say that I do not use my Road King for commuting, I would wear for that, too many crazy during rush hour.
As nice as it is to go without, I always wear one. I plan on riding, and living along time. One bad situation without a helmet, and the odds of ending all that go way up.
Well now you have the choice!
I have lots of friends that don't wear helmets by I for one will always wear a helmet.
I know to many people who have gone down and suffered head injuries. Not say that you won't suffer a head injury if wearing a helmet but your chances of avoiding or lessening a head injury are greatly improved if wearing a helmet.
