Cedar Island ferry only runs 4 times per day right now, and NCDOT ferry site says you need ot make reservations. Just keep that in mind if you are going to try that.
OBX is great! We go there all the time since it is close. All of the advice above is great and ditto the sand, restaurants sand house rentals. We rent a house when we run the OBX marathon each year. We usually get a big house with a couple other families and are much cheaper than the hotels. Be sure to check out the lighthouses to climb, Kill Devil Hills, Wright Brothers National Memorial, Orcacoke Island and the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island.
I stayed in Sea Level, NC just east of Cedar Island. Wanted a t-shirt from Nags Head HD, so I planned a day trip via the Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry, through Beaufort and then the Hatteras ferry. It's about 70 miles up the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to Nags Head. Took a total of about 6 hours with only one fuel stop. The ride back took longer because I stopped in a couple of places on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The trip from Nags Head to the end of Hatteras Island is a day to itself, if you want to leave enough time to stop and see some beautiful scenery. If you're staying in the Nags head/Kill Devil Hills area it's a must do day trip!

Been trying to make this for the last three years but not yet. This year still recovering from surgery and the last two years we took family vacations to the OBX in June. Maybe next year.

Another good reason to have a reservation: On my trip the first week of April, I had reservations I made online on the 4:00 ferry. I was in Wilmington, NC when I got a call from the Ferry System telling me that due to a mechanical problem, the 4:00 was cancelled and asking me if I wanted a reservation on the 5:30. Without a reservation, I wouldn't have gotten the heads up call, I would have arrived at Cedar Island at around 3:30 and would have had to wait 2 hours for the 5:30. That would have been annoying. As it turned out, it just allowed us more time for lunch and leisurely ride.
But if the reverse had occurred and I had reservations on the 5:30 and IT was cancelled without me knowing I could have arrived at the ferry dock at 5:00 with no ferry until the next day, which would have been worse than annoying. There isn't much within an hour or so of Cedar Island.
Make reservations and they'll call you with changes. The next day, when we were leaving Ocracoke on the ferry north to Hatteras Island, we heard of more ferry cancellations on the Cedar Island Ferry, so apparently the situation I encountered wasn't unusual.
The Rally was pretty good this year. We had close friends in 3 houses close together. 5 nights of crazy house parties. Each house had 9 king rooms .. party room huge kitchens. Anyway got to hit Port O Call, Lucky 12 multiple times. Road down to Hatteras but the wait for Ocracoke ferry was 3 hours when we went down. Stopped at Pop's in Buxton on the way back. There was lot's of things to do during the day although the weather was cool for the most part. Not much exposed skin except for the coleslaw wrestling on Friday. I'm still detoxing on Tuesday.

This tread is couple years old but has some good info for anyone wanting to visit. Kitty Hawk beach was just one of one of the nicest beach in the US to visit. (Just own our local news)
Crom, i too have to agree with you regarding one of best turn outs of bikers and rally in general.
It's was nice not to see a bunch of LEOs on rt 168. Heck I didn't even see anyone being pulled over at all!

YB
Yeah YB ... I didn't see many cops except the one that pulled my buddy over. He just got a warning. I think many of the cops were undercover as there was many MC's in town. There was a good vibe. Did not personally see any fights.
It was a good time. I stayed in a house behind Lucky 12 with a bunch of friends. Spent most evenings in Lucky 12. The ride to Vertigo Tattoo friday and saturday was an awesome change from all the stop lights. Longboards had the most vendors, Port O Call had some custom bikes on display and for sale, Lucky 12 had the best atmosphere and coldest beer. Kelly's was crazy packed, especially when Krunch played.
I rode down on Sunday (rain and 30mph constant winds. on the bridge had to creep across it because the gusts would blow you all over the place), it was pretty much dead til friday night. Saturday, all you saw were bikes everywhere. It was awesome.
Would I go again? Sure would and looking forward to it.
