Not sure why anyone would spend that kind of money on a non-DOT helmet. Just wondering.
Use to wonder the same thing myself until I found the Skull Crusher line.
A fiberglass DOT helmet with styrofoam interior, good for one hard impact, probably made in China.
vs.
Carbon Fiber / Kevlar with a memory foam interior good for many hard impacts, hand made in USA.
Not trying to be a wise *** here but this just makes sense to me. I'm no pro on testing and safety standards but Kevlar and Carbon fiber, are showing up all over the place due to its high strength. Memory foam is also being used more and more.
Either way wearing something is better than nothing.
speaking of half-helmets, anyone know when these Grateful Dead helmets by River Road come out??? I guess the jackets are finally available, but these have been in "my favorites" for MONTHS and they still say "Pre-Order"

They say when a helmet is in a crash its shot. So the many hits thing isnt true. They also say even if you drop your helmet the thing should be replaced. True story.......
Go somewhere and try it on before you get one! I've had a couple of them and just bought my latest, and likely the last one: the Pit Boss by Bell - DOT and paid $119...oh and NO mushroom head!

Read my post, I referenced Skull Crush Helmets. Go to their website and read the write up http://skullcrushgear.com/dotapproved.html . "Many Impacts" is what it states. I don't know who "they" is that you refer too but generalizing my statement saying it isn't True, isn't True.

I use a Voss carbon/kevlar. Really light, comfortable. DOT approved. Highly recommend. Go to their web site or call them. They are extremely helpful and the helmet is great.

Some of the best helmets in the world dont have a "you can wreck and the helmet is still good" stamp. I've had $500 helmets, one i dropped off my bike going 10mph, called the manufact and thats when i found out it was shot. Called 3 different helmet companys and all said the same thing. If i remember right, the shell once dropped is compramised and thast why your supposed to treat em like they are made of glass. And nice bike, what size bars are them.
