Classic and Ultra diff
The diff is the extra money you can spend to upgrade the Classic to the Ultra

I'm thinking of buying a '96 FLHTC.....my question....what is the difference from the Ultra version?

96 was the last year of the old-style frame.97's and up are about an inch lower. It was also the first year of the new batwing. If your speakers are shot, the J&M's are double what they are for 95 and prior or 98 and up. I made my own with Pioneer co-ax's and custom grilles uphosltered in swimsuit cloth that matched the States Blue Pearl. If you get the '96 and need a couple things (Like-new Mustang seat, etc.), let me know.
I actually preferred the looks of the Classic over the Ultra. But now that I have had the Ultra for 6 months or so.....it's growing on me.....

Start with the priceof the Classic and simply add the costof the stock Ultra Classic itemsthat you will want to add to the Classic to see which is a better buy for you and your style of riding.
I made a list of all the 'extra' stuff on the Ultra versus the Classic then looked up the prices of thoseitems in theHD parts catalog. Not counting the labor-cost for the items I'ed not want toinstall myself, (i.e. cut holes to add brake lights to tour pac, etc.) the $2,000 extra MSRP for the Ultra was abetter buy.
Now that I've had the Ultra for a year, I've learned that while I don't normally use the CB - it ishandy when riding with a group. The lowers make riding in the winter a lot more enjoyable. The four-speaker radio sounds great on the road. The extra brake lites in the tourpac seem like a good investment for added safety in stop & go traffic. The Ultra Classic bag liners, tool kit, and intercom headset are a nice features. When going cross-crounty, the cruse control is a 'must have' for those of us that like to kick back, listen to the tunes, and watch this beautiful country roll by.

I bought a 96 E Glide Classic EFI a couple of years ago and still love it. The HD Tech who was the original owner put most of the difference on himself. I don't have the Cruise or CB, but who's complaining...
Nice to know about the speakers...
Get yourself the shop manual. These beasts are getting to be like Commodore Computers.
Let us know how you make out. Check out the EVO Classic section when you have a chance.
