Default Purchase advice, please

Sorry, forum, but new guy here would like a little advice. I've been riding for for thirty years and just sold my BMW K1200LT. Never had a Harley, but I'm considering purchasing a 2001 Ultra Classic that I found nearby. Just like Sgt. Schultz, "I know nothing" about the intricacies of Harleys. I would like to know if this bike is a good deal at around $10k. I would also like to know about any year or model specific gotchas. What important questions should I ask the seller? What should I pay attention to when looking at the bike? I'm no mechanical dummy. I've worked on everything from lawn mowers to jets. I just like to educate myself before taking a leap. Sorry to dump this on the knowledgeable people of this forum, but who better to ask? Thanks in advance!

Here's the bike, it's a 2001 Ultra Classic.

Excellent condition, well maintained bike with 49,722 miles by original owner. Color is Jade Sunglo. New battery and starter installed on 1/17/12 and front and rear tires have only 2,000 miles on them. There is over $12,000.00 in accessories and performance parts alone including a 6 speed transmission, 95 inch big bore kit, Andrews 26G gear drive cams, Rinehart true duals with extra set of quiet baffles, Sirius satelite radio, chrome wheels, rotors, forks and much, much more. If you are interested I can send you a complete list of all accessories. Always covered and garaged. Bike looks and runs great, accident free and has clear title. $10000.

Is it fuel injected? The injection systems before 03 or 04 are troublesome and almost impossible to fix. Carberated it would be ok. 10K is too much. Had a friend with a 01 Screamin Eagle bike that only got that much for it a year ago.

From what I can see on CycleTrader, 10k seems to be an average asking price for that year / model. Nice upgrades too, assuming everything is good working order.

I paid 8k for a 1999 model. I wish it had all the upgrades that one has.

Since I paid less for an older model I am now more into my bike than what they want for that one.

Cam Gear drive will set you back at least 1500 and the tranny could be anywhere from 1500 to 3000. Then you add the big bore kit and you are looking at at another 1000 easy. When mine is done I will have more into it than that and I am looking at similar upgrades. Sounds like a good deal to me. I would have it inspected at Harley and use anything as a reason to discount the bike.

Never know offer him 8500 cash and he might take it.

It depends!
If you consider the bike's current conditions, plus all the upgrades' values, then it's fair. But to talk about the value of this bike, the price is too much. It doesn't matter what upgrades have been put in it; it is a 11 years old bike, and you can get a much newer bike with that price, or a little bit more.
Just my 2 cents!
