My start up bang went away with a new starter and is much cheaper and easier to do than the compensator. There are numerous threads on replacing the compensator and it is a very popular thing to do. After consulting with numerous Harley techs I found that 99% had never changed the compensator out while 100% had changed the starter clutch. A year ago the popular thing to do was the welding of the crank to prevent scissoring, don't hear much about that anymore either. Not sayin, just sayin.
